I have a Model 42 410 with Cyl bore Manufactured in 1938 in 80% condition. Nice clean gun I have had for 40 years. Just curious what it might be worth? I may just pass it on down.

Cyl is a nice rarer choke. Is there a solid rib or plain barrel? Some pics would help evaluate the price accurately.

Its just a plain barrel. I am not real tech savvy. Just curious on a ball park. I may give it to a family member if it nots worth much.

That is a very optimistic price estimate. For a well used pre war Model 42 in cyl choke 1500-1800 is doing really well. If you find a buyer at 2500 let me know, I have some model 42s I'll sell them.

I bought an original, 98 percent field gun for $1,800 a couple of years ago and I bought a refinished gun on the campfire for around $1,000 if memory serves. $2,500 seems high. I was at Tulsa a year ago and several really clean, 90 percent plus 42s were sitting at $1,800 to $2,500 pricing.

If all original and no pad / original LOP, i would say $1400-$1500, though I am not sure how the open choke affects value. I love mine by the way.

Winpoor, I think Kevin's of Thomasville has a couple/few mod. 42s.

Pictures are worth a thousand words in threads like this. This shotgun was referred to "Everybody's sweetheart". 80% condition examples in all original condition are probably pretty rare. As we all know, originality boosts prices and firearms such as this one should really be checked out by professionals for an accurate appraisal. But for chits and giggles, lets go to a book I use as reference from time to time: "The red book of Winchester values". Here is what the book says:

"Model 42 Standard grade shotgun,
26-28" barrel, ribbed fore-end,
plain wood finish, pistol grip,
plain barrel, 410 bore"


"80% very good condition": $1,650.00

That estimate does not take into account a 26 inch model 42 with a CYLINDER bore. If it is actually factory marked cylinder bore it is a very rare bird. I have never even seen a photo of a factory cylinder bore 42 let alone one in the flesh. I don't think $2500 is out of line at all maybe higher if it is really an 80% gun.

80 percent does not make collector grade. !000 bucks is my opinion.

$1500 tops at 80% and that is pushing it. Pump guns are for the most part out of favor. .410 pumps even more so. No rib doesn't do much for it either.

FWIW, I would have to agree. But then again, I'm not very fond of Winchesters.

I have a 26" MOD plain barrel with a little wear on the magazine tube ( not much). I was being a smart arse last year and took it to the opening dove hunt. Not only was it more fun than any that I could recall, but I shot over fifty percent using 8.5 2 1/2 inch target loads. I had some outrageous offers from some well heeled shooters, back at the lodge. I'm not sure how much was serious or how much was the whiskey talking. No matter, my granddaughters get it.

I reluctantly left it home this week, because as my old guy dealer friend describes it, it is dam near new and the sun flowers are thick as a jungle this year, and I don't want any scratches on it.

Must have been opening day when the doves were a little stupid! I grew up on a 410, at 14 my Dad bought me the first 1100 to hit town, plane barrel 26 Imp Cly ,26", after years of a 410 I was death on dove, wore the gun slam out 3 times, high brass 9's first season, home grown birds and high brass 7.5 second season when Yankee birds came down! I still love a 410 at a hot weather water hole, or when I was feeding 600 steers and heifers I would slip around farm by myself and kill a mess with 410. The ring neck dove have taken root at home ,I would not shoot them for 5 years ,there are plenty now! no season nor law when it comes to them! v best winpoor

Mr Jack, If you change your mind or want a nice OU 28 ga for your granddaughter, let me know, I need a good 26 , mod 42! There are easier guns to teach a kid on than a .410. I got good but in reality, the damn thing shot like a rifle! Boy when Dad got tired of paying the same money for high brass 3" 410 shells, he sprung for the very first year ,first Rem 1100 to hit town, I wish I knew how many dove, quail and woodducks I nailed with that gun! v best winpoor

Sunflowers are great BUT if you ever shoot a field of Bennie or Sesame seed, Jeeze, its like they are on dope, they just keep coming, its like you are not there or shooting the barrel so hot you cannot touch it! I just thought pearl millet with cattle on it was good, Ive shot 5 or 6 Bennie fields and it is a pure drug on dove! My very best day was 64 picked up, no dog and I bet I lost 10 or more! good times!!! the very best WinBroke
