Hey guys,

Was looking for some help. I appraised some guns for a friend from an estate and he had two rifles that because of the circumstances, I wasn't sure what to give him for a value.

The first is a pre 64 Winchester model 88 in .308 with a low, four digit serial number starting with a 3. The rifle is in good condition except for the stock. Someone cut the stock and put an hideous, homemade crescent buttplate on it. The rest of the gun is not perfect but not bad. The stock however is useless. How much value will the stock being destroyed take from the gun? The stock is absolutely not repairable. I know pictures help but he is looking for a rough estimate.

The other is a post 64 model 100 in .308. This gun has some bluing wear and I don't know much about the model 100's so told him $400-500 was my guess with the wear.

Again, I know pictures help but I didn't take any. Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Mark
Here's my $.02 for what it's worth......

The 308 is the most common and commands the lowest price of the different calibers. With the screwed up stock, I'd say the 88 probably tops out at about $500 and perhaps, less. I've recently seen some pre 64 308's with pads priced in the mid $400s. A nice, original cloverleaf tang stock will probably sell for about $400. So, getting a replacement stock is probably not a cost/value wise decision.

I think you're about right on the 100.
Thanks Levers, that's pretty much what I told him.

I think Levers put an accurate estimate for the 88 and 100. One note on the model 100; Winchester issued a recall on all model 100 firing pins. There should still be an active phone # to call which will verify if, by your serial #, the firing pin has been replaced, if not it offers you to send in the old firing pin to receive a new firing pin and a check for $30.00. I just replaced the firing pin on a model 100 .284, not too difficult of a process and may make it easier to sell.
Shame about the stock..kills the value as a collector...good candidate for an MPI ...they make a stock for the 88
Thanks again guys for the replies.

Yeah I should have taken pictures of the stock to post them here, just to make you guys cringe..... It is one of the worst butcher jobs I have ever seen. He did the exact same thing to one of the other rifles but that one wasn't anything special so didn't look as awful as the one on the Winchester.
