Well, I am the new proud owner of a pre 64 model 70. I believe most of y'all have already seen it. It was the 257 Roberts that was the topic of a thread on here. I was watching it on gunbroker, before I saw it on here. The rifle is very clean to my eyes even though the stock has been refinished, I still think I did ok.
I am a 257 nut, and wanted one in a pre 64 but the local gun show prices around here are crazy. I really like the rifle and so far it really likes sierra 100 gr. GK's with 4350. Still messing around with other bullets.
I am sure I will be asking questions about pre 64 's from y'all so please bear with me. I have learned a lot just reading older post.

Congrats! You've purchased a superb rifle in an excellent caliber.

Be warned: The pre-64 action will spoil you to the point where nothing else seems quite good enough. It's the pre-64 model 70 curse, and it's a wonderful problem to have!

The pre 64 model 70 is a curse, but I still have a soft spot for the m1917 .... OP, post a pic of your new rifle. A lot of good guys here that are very knowledgeable when it comes to the pre 64's..

I will post up some pics in a few days. I know I will need to have the trigger done, It needs some work. I just got rings and bases for it Saturday. I had a vx1 2-7x32 laying around,so I mounted it.

I hope your new Rifle gives you as much joy in the future as I have gotten from owning my first Model 70 that I bought back in 1966.
I paid $120.00 for a mint condition pre-64 Model 70 in caliber 22 Hornet I recall that amount because I had to borrow $20.00 from my friend to get to that gunshow sale price.
The last time I allowed a Model 70 collector to see that Hornet he offered me $1,750.00 for it and that was many years ago.
Indeed gunshow prices can often appear crazed - but the diligent, patient and informed gunshow attendee can on occasion find or finagle a "good deal"!
I know - I done it.
Winchester pre-64 Model 70's in 257 Roberts are sweet shooting guns as I recall, as it has been at least 25 years since I have shot any of my three current 257's.
Keep after'em there's more out there.

A beautiful .257 Roberts on GB was the beginning of my seeking out pre64 Winchesters. That one ended up going at what I thought was a "too high" price. Wish I had that opportunity back.

An un-modified pre-64 never gets old for me. There's something about them that just looks right. I guess they set the standard for every other rifle, which pretty much established what a bolt action rifle is "supposed" to look like. Yours sure looks great to me!

I hunt with two excellent pre-64 M70's and one very good pre-64 M88 - but I keep this mint 1953 pre-64 M70FW in 308 WIN as my backup in case all the rest ever need replacing. Very nice 257 RBTS you have there Stikshooter - enjoy! Odessa

BSA, it is a 1950 model. How can you tell by seeing it? I can tell you it likes 45 grains of Imr 4350 behind a 100 gr sierra GK. It grouped those a hair over a 1/2". I loaded up some 100 Nosler BT and some 115 gr partitions, going to see how those do
About the only complaint I have is the trigger. Going to have to look at that when I get time.

The triggers can be fine tuned with little fuss. Generally just a little polishing on the sear/trigger engagement areas and a tad lighter spring. I get mine down to 2.5 pounds easily enough. Nice shooting pre 64 you have, sounds damn promising. Probably the only complaint I'd have with a standard wt. 257 Roberts is the weight. However, I'll bet it's a joy to shoot. As for guessing the years, it's easy enough to do if your rifle has original parts like bolt handle, bolt sleeve, bolt release button, safety lever, butt plates, recoil pads, stock, color of stock, checkering panels, etc. It's obvious your stock has been refinished, but it still looks good and sounds like it shoots lights out. You have a very solid rifle right there. I'll bet you will enjoy it for a looooooong time and even pass it down, if you keep it that long. These rifles will easily outlast most of us here...

.257 Roberts is my favorite pre'64 M/70, I have owned several over the 40 yrs. I have been collecting/shooting/hunting with these fine rifles. My current .257 is a Featherweight whose previous owner had it rebarreled by Douglass, why Winchester never produced the FW in .257 I'll never understand.
