am re-doing a early 50s pre-64 stock. what currently available dyes or stains that you've used have proven to closely duplicate the shade of that vintage factory stocks? thank you.
ruffedgrouse, I've heard this stuff works nicely. I've never tried it. Maybe someone else that has will chime in. I'd like to give it a try one of these days. Generally I just use a mix of stain that closely resembles the color I'm looking for:

Pre 64 stock stain

I know I'm not a professional, but have refinished quite a few gunstocks...The pre 64's can be kind of tricky because as we all know the grade of walnut they used varied throughout the years...

I have used the product BSA mentions and it works pretty well. Like he said though it can work better on some stocks than others but overall it is the best I have found.

I have used the galazans , I used a filler in conjunction with it.I thought it turned out well. My limited experience with pre 64 70's has shown the factory stock finishes to be "all over the place" as far as color, gloss, satin ect. So duplicating the finish is tough , since they don't seem too "standardized". In summary the Galazans may not replicate your stocks color or finish, but it is a good product.
+1 on the Galazan stain, I have also used the stain made by Timberluxe.
thanks for your input guys. I used some a number of years ago, a small bottle that says "pre-64." Cannot remember where I got it, maybe Brownells, maybe Pilkington, the stock maker, but it turned out far to reddish, nothing like the originals. Don't want this one to look like that.
