Pre64 Standard in 257 Roberts. Mid 50's. Looks perfect to me, I would say 95%+ The LGS has a tag at $1899, I think I could get it at $1700. Don't really need it, but I do not see these often. Correct sights, sling attachments, butt plate, etc. Sorry I know no pictures..
Sounds cool. The 257 Roberts is a rare bird. The last one I saw in person, sold for over $2,400.00 and it was in 95% condition...
Pre'64 M/70 .257 Roberts in 95%+ are hard to find, $1899 is a good deal and $1700 would be a steal. If you want the rifle I wouldn't hesitate or it will be gone. Most nice M/70 Roberts sell for $2000 to $2400.
Well I'm going to go look at it again tomorrow, with an eye to buy not just look. It has been around for at least three months, so I think they might deal.
There is down here in Phoenix a Win Pre war M70 pre64 257 Roberts for $1195, that has been....... Rechambered in 257 Weatherby Magnum!! Why?? Oh Why?? The pain is almost unbearable!!
Getting my ducks in a row.. Ladder type rear site, front site with hood, rear butt plate steel or thin red rubber Winchester? Date code on the under side of the barrel. Anything else that should be looked at?
.257 Roberts should have a steel buttplate, if it has a recoil pad the price should be $1200 +/-.
Good luck, it sounds like a good deal if it's original.
Well I think I got an even better deal. 2907XX 1954, barrel date code was 53 as 2907XX is early in 54 I am OK with that. Bluing was almost perfect, a couple of thin spots on the bolt knob was all. A couple of slight dents in the stock nothing through the finish. It may not have ever had a scope mounted, as the blanking screws were still in place. Bore was perfect, bluing on the ejector was not marked, and the bluing on the steel butt plate was without a mark. (I think both the ejector and butt plate were blued from the factory) They were asking $1899, I got it for $1599. Have to wait 10 days to pick it up so no pictures yet. CA is an insane state, but I have found that if a firearm is not a Taticool or plastic fantastic deals can be found.
Awesome deal man!!! Post the pics after your waiting period. I'd love to check it out.. Congrats...
Sounds nice. Awaiting pics!

IMO, "insane" is one of the kinder adjectives one could use about California . . .
I was being nice.... Can't wait to retire and get outa here.. New rules coming one firearm per 30 day period, long or short. Separate license or background check to buy ammo.. and more coming all the time.

I had a hard time getting them to take the action out of the stock, "Why would we do that?" Had to explain it was a collectable rifle and things like a incorrect date code on the barrel could make it worth half of what they were asking. Couple of the younger guys at the counter learned something..
Good deal that you made them do that smithrjd. I am going to have to do the same thing when I go to purchase that 220 Swift supergrade in June... I'm not as concerned that it has a supergrade stamp on the barrel, but that it isn't glued in to the stock. The owner said it was glass bedded and he "hasn't had it out of the stock for 51 years.... If the barreled action doesn't come out of that stock, I will probably not buy the rifle... sick
I had to wipe the comsomline or grease off the under side, I doubt that it had ever been out before. Screws were perfect as well. Had to show the senior guy the screw into the barrel and the one under the floorplate... At least he had correct screw tips.
Sounds like a damn nice rifle!!!
They have some others, two Model 52's and three Browning FN Mausers two are high grade models. I don't really know the market on those. Here many folks just dump Grandpa's or Dad's collections. They don't want them or know what they are. One consignment came in a couple of months ago, from the husband. I picked up a very nice Remington 541S with a scope for $600, a Ithaca English Ultra 20 gauge for $350. A Model 53 S&W 8 3/8" first year in the box with the optional 22LR cylinder and inserts for $1500. A Glock would have been $100 over retail...
I'll have to ask what the deal on the 257 Roberts was, it was a trade in... Originally on consignment but when it didn't sell quick it was traded. Doubt the LGS had $1K in it.
Dang, the cheapest I have ever seen a pre 64 M70 in 257 Roberts was $1600 and it was gone in a minute

I hear you. But if you move to Texas, please leave the "progressive" ideas at the state line. Lots of folks moving here from Cali to avoid taxes. Then, they want to vote in this or that they had there.
How you going to pay for that?
We'll use tax money.
Sheesh! Sometimes I think we need more than one border wall!

One border wall is good enough. Just give a test and If you have silly ideas and don't pass, you go on the other side of the wall.... wink.. It would be a one way ticket to get the fu ck out of my country!!!!! ! !
I grew up in Northern Minnesota, retired out of the Navy and got a Government job in CA.. Not where I really wanted to be, but had to make a living. CA is actually a beautiful state, it's the politics and people that screw it up. I live in a conservative bastion, Riverside county. Had Aunts and Uncles from Richardson in TX. When we went to visit they always thought I talked funny.. Often I had trouble understanding them LOL. Not sure where but going back towards the Midwest again, where for the most part people are sane. Believe it or not, most of the "illegals" are actually very good folks, just looking to better their lives for the kids. Some are not.. Those need to go, I'm sure folks in Texas see the same thing. I am not "progressive" by any means, The borders and laws need to be enforced.

The actual out the door price after taxes (8 1/4%) DROS (registration fees) was $1739.. Yes one has to pay taxes on a used rifle that most likely one all ready paid taxes on..
And . . . I'm waiting for my LGS to get a new pistola in so I can get it and one already waiting for me on one background check.

Texas . . . It's like a whole 'nother country!
True, many folks coming from Mexico just want to work, and are willing to work hard. Can't blame them.

As far as nice places screwed up by the government, Mexico has a lot of pretty country and a lot of resources.
Congrats on the 257.. I'm a little jealous. They are some sweet rifles.
Smithrjd: I am very happy for you getting that Rifle (as described) at that price!
You are on a luck streak (other than living in kalifornicationkopia!) - buy lotto!
Hold into the wind

You know I posted this 257 Roberts to the board on 1/22/17, I wasn't really interested in it at the time. Every time I went in there it was talking to me sitting on the wall. A late 20's S&W 6" I frame 32 Long in almost perfect Nickel sat for over 6 months before I finally bought it. I am friends with a couple of the folks at the LGS and they know I'm a sucker for something old and odd..
This is the Winchester section, but does anyone know about older Browning FN Mausers? They have three on consignment that I know are most likely rare.. Two are what I would call the highest grade, (Supreme?) wood, engraved etc. One is in 284 Winchester, another in 338 Win Mag. The last one is a more standard grade 22-250 all have scopes and mounts.
That rifle would not have sat in a rack for three hours (let alone three months) where I shop for guns....

You got that right. Its funny how geographical differences affect prices..
I would agree, The Ithaca Model 37 English Ultra 20 gauge would not have lasted 10 minutes back East or in the Midwest. Another one on the rack, an early Ruger 44 mag carbine, about 98% $500. Again another market it would be gone before you were sure you saw it. One of the few benefits to living here I guess.
I am no expert, but I believe something to look out for with Browning guns of that period are "salt wood" guns. This is something you can probably look up should you need to. I think a FN Browning in .338 would be kinda cool. I wouldn't be interested in the two even shorter cartridges in a full length FN action, but that's just me.

I say buy all the good guns in Cali the mall ninjas are too stupid to care about, then get the [bleep] out! But again, that's just me! : )
Dang! The software caught my misspelling (something engineers hardly ever do INTENTIONALLY) and "bleeped" me! Go "bleeping" figure!
They did not exhibit any signs of salt wood, I would have to check the serial numbers to be sure. All of the Browning shotguns in that lot are already gone, many were rare and high end. I just wish I had more money to spend..
When I bought the 257 Roberts I looked at an another one just coming in, a "RED 9" Mauser Bolo 1908 if memory serves. Inside the original wood shoulder stock. No idea what that one is priced at yet. There is a High Standard Supermatic Trophy with a 7 1/4" fluted barrel sitting for over 5 months now, $699. If I didn't already have a Citation..
