Sounds like you are the man to ask.. Have you tried your faithful Zeiss 2-8 (or older Zeiss, can't remember what model) on one of these?
I haven’t tried any modern scope on these rifles as the rear bridges are not drilled. I opted for vintage sights to keep the gun era correct. I put the Lyman 48 on the 30-06 to keep one as it would have been with iron sights. The Hornet is tough to shoot at much distance as it is a straight crosshair in a 2 power scope, but a friend still hit a prairie dog with it at 205 yards.
As far as balance goes, I never paid much attention to that in a hunting rifle. I have so many different kinds of guns and I use them all, so I take them hunting and really haven’t been bothered by balance...
