Just wondering if the carbine was a good rifle to have or not? I've always liked the featherweight models, but I'm wondering how the carbine's are with their 20" barrels. I ran across a 30-06 clean up rifle (made in '53). Just curious to see if any of you here like them. Share your opinions and stories. Thanks...

I like anything rare and nice. I started a small collection of pre-war carbines and they are so hard to find, I won't go broke anytime soon finding them. I have 3 pre-wars, one Hornet, 1 .270 and 1 30-06. I have shot stuff with the Hornet and the 270. Still waiting for a kill with the 30-06. It also helps to keep them correct with vintage scopes and sights...

Sounds like you are the man to ask.. Have you tried your faithful Zeiss 2-8 (or older Zeiss, can't remember what model) on one of these?

I haven’t tried any modern scope on these rifles as the rear bridges are not drilled. I opted for vintage sights to keep the gun era correct. I put the Lyman 48 on the 30-06 to keep one as it would have been with iron sights. The Hornet is tough to shoot at much distance as it is a straight crosshair in a 2 power scope, but a friend still hit a prairie dog with it at 205 yards.

As far as balance goes, I never paid much attention to that in a hunting rifle. I have so many different kinds of guns and I use them all, so I take them hunting and really haven’t been bothered by balance...

Thanks shrap. I guess balance matters to me a lot. It's one of those things I value in a good hunting rifle, as I generally carry my rifle in 1 hand.

I have a model 70 20" barreled 30/06 made in 1941. At the range it is very accurate. I,ve only
taken 1 deer and 1 antelope with it. Been meaning to get it out and compare velocities
to my new 30/06 with 24" barrel.

Well not a Winchester but I'm really starting to like my CZ 550 FS in 9.3x62 I bought last year. So far I've used it on a black bear hunt in northern Alberta this spring. It was perfect for the atv travel and sitting in a treestand required on this hunt.
