I want to build another 9.3x62 (and keep it, lol). The Savage Storm 30-06 is a hell of a buy for under $800. Adjustable stock for length of pull and cheek rise as well as the Accuracy stock system with the metal bedding rail.
Not looking for a safe queen. Looking to end up with a reliable rifle with decent accuracy and a good trigger.
Would appreciate everyones opinion.
Any negatives for the Savage other than looks?

I used one to build a 6BR, and it worked well enough. No issues. I know of several people who've used them for anything and everything, and they seem satisfied.

One of the guys at Graf & Sons used one to build a little .17 Fireball of some sort, and he was tickled with it.

I don't know how many Savages I've owned, but it's "several", and other than some extraction issues on hard-used prairie dog rifles, never had a problem with them. I shot those guns HARD though, and Savage sent me an envelope of extractors when I asked for them. I can't complain about that.
They are easy to work on, and shoot like a sonuvagun when you're done. Hard to fuss about that.

The negative is they can become addicting! I have swapped out barrels on 5 so far- two into 250 Savage (one lefty), one 7mm/08 (lefty) a 358 Win, and a 30/06 to 260 Rem (had a buggered 30/06 barrel and screwed in the 260 from an earlier swap).

Oh, make that 6- a lefty into 22/250.

I bought mine used so they have mostly been pre-AccuTrigger. The old model can be tweaked a bit to make a decent trigger if desired. The 22/250 has a AccuTrigger which was the reason it was chosen for the conversion.

My first experience with the AccuTrigger was on a 375 H&H. The trigger became inoperable from the recoil (I'm guessing as the gun was pretty light) and I replaced with a Timney. Worked well for a few hundred rounds more before I sold it.

I have had a bunch of lefty bolt guns. I recently bought a Savage Ultralite and really like it except for the bolt lift. I have been spoiled by my Browning A and X Bolts and it's hard to use anything else. I ordered a aftermarket bolt handle to see if that helps.

I've swapped a bunch of barrels on Savage rifles and think it's a great idea.

My smallest are several 6mmBR and the biggest was a 7mm Rem Mag that I rebarreled to 416 Taylor with an assortment in between.

Take a look at Shaw Custom Barrels site to get an idea on cost and lead time and look at Shilen site for info on barrel weight and contours.

If you buy a Shilen,go through a broker, it's cheaper! I've used Jerry The Barrel Man and more recently, James at Northland Shooter Supply.

You can buy direct from Shaw and they make a great barrel!

You'll need to know the shank diameter (Large or Small) of your Savage before you order!

It's simplest if you stay within a family of cartridges if you're changing barrels.
A 30-06 or 270 rifle to 9.3x62, no problem.
A 338 Win Mag to 9.3x62, you'd need to swap the bolt face ejector/extractor assembly and the magazine box.

Only concern may be the bolt face from '06 to 9.3x62mm

.473" to .480" But should work

Large shank Savage actions are reserved for the WSM cartidges...Target actions...'M' series s/shot actions

Newer Savage seem to come with the 'smooth/non knurled' barrel nut..takes special wrench to remove

I’m not sure if available in the US, but a LH Tikka T3 SS synthetic in 9.3x62 is available here.

I have done one Savage custom. Had Douglas Barrels fit a "castrated" SS .30-06 barrel. Dropped it into a McM McSwirly. Shot lights out. Got bored. Sold it. At times, wish I had it back. Dead nuts simple rifle in a "do all" chambering.
