I carry bolt rifles although we have an AR 15 and an AK47 in the house. For my purposes a bolt rifle works fine but you know how gun confiscation tends to work in increments and you don't have a constitution guaranteeing the right to keep and bear arms.

Well, semi auto rifles such as the AR are not in fact illegal to own, just that the requirements are stringent. Station/ranch owners, farmers, etc, can own and use them for pest control, ferals, pigs, goats, etc, but strictly on their own property.

Handguns are legal, you just need to be a member of a pistol club, take a safety course, background check, store them in a safe when not in use, etc, etc.

How does Australia regulate suppressors?

I believe those regulations restricting certain firearms in the U.S. are getting nullified as the cases make their way through the court system.

When I travel I keep an AK loaded with 25 rounds visible on top of our supplies in the backseat and model 66 S&W .357 at hand on the console. Never have I heard so much as a remark about the firearms when going through the gates at the various National and State parks. Even in California. But I never open carry, too much danger of someone coming up from behind and snatching the handgun.

Of course I'm covered by the federal LEOSA which allows me to carry on the street of any city in the USA. Buildings, private businesses, and such retain the right to proscribe weapons on their property.

If we base it on multiple homicide events rather than limiting it to shootings you would be right. There have been about the same number of multiple-homicide events in Oz in the time since these laws as there were in the corresponding period prior to them. There has been some method substitution - the recent period has, for example, seen more killed with such things as arson - but the number of events and number dead is about the same. These have, fortunately, always been rare here, and they continue to be rare.

Partly I suspect because we don't have the social issues and upheavals the US has, we also generally don't see our firearms as weapons.

All in all, Australia has been fairly consistent.

I got a Dillon XL 750 progressive. I’ve always been a Lee guy, so this is like going from a Honda to a BMW. Despite Lee arguably being the bottom of the bunch, in 16 years, I never outshot the loads my Classic single stage and turret presses made. I always wanted a progressive, but couldn’t justify it. Besides, if I was going progressive, I wasn’t going half way.

Recently, I got my justification. My 9mm game was being held back from lack of volume, so I got the Dillon. Problem was, with the case feeder and Mr. Bullet Feeder, it stood about 114cm tall, which was too high for my bench setup.

No “Before” pics, but this first one shows the dedicated press table to the left. It was about 45cm higher to facilitate the quick detach base I used to swap out the Lees (and Mec 600, jr).







Here it is from another angle. Note the Lee QD base has been relocated and the MEC is currently there.






The surprise in all of this was the Lee press stand. For years, I laughed at the thought of this thing. Even for a Lee, this appeared “Ghetto”. With the Dillon being permanently mounted, I didn’t have a location for mounting or storage. For $150 AUD, I considered this a storage solution until I decided where to set up the QD base. Single stage on top, turret on bottom left and and MEC relocated to bottom right.







Honestly, this thing is dope. It works extremely well as a press mount and a great solution for guys using multiple presses in a tight space. I wish I bought 2 of them years ago.

I hadn't seen one one those stands before...kind of useful for enclosed spaces.


Added, have got to say that I like those bloody great big green storage boxes.

In his book, Lee suggests the other brands over-engineer their equipment. I’ve always found value in their designs. I’m of the opinion that a person’s ability to tinker must increase as the Lee product’s complexity does. I think a lot of people have no problem with that since tinkering in the nature of reloading, anyway.

I can’t speak to Dillon’s Square Deal or other presses, but the 750 is meant for somebody that’s willing to pay a high dollar for high volume and low maintenance. If I wasn’t in that niche group, I’d have found the Lee turret suitable for my needs.

Lets not underestimate the “Want” factor, either. 😏

If Lee ever figured out a way to have their turret press index consistently, it would wreck a lot of progressive sales.

Some places in the USA discourage self protection but most of the south and the west allow you to stand your ground with no duty to retreat.
