My 4 weaner pigs are arriving this week and I'm trying to get everything ready for them. The pasture they will be in is fenced in 4 strands of barbed wire, which I don't expect will slow them down much. My plan is to run 2 strands of hot wire at 6 and 18 inches inside the existing fence. However, I see people recommending 6+ joule fencers for pigs. The one I have is a 110v model rated for 30 miles of fence but only produces 2 joules. Think the pigs will respect it or just push through? I am considering adding a 2 foot strip of orange plastic snow fence around the bottom of the fence to give them a better visual of where the fence is, so hopefully they don't try to charge through. Think this will work?

Little pigs tend to run on through, bigger ones will back away. After they learn it, no problem. miles
6inches is kinda low, any grass growth, or their rooting will make things real close to the wire. If you keep it clear, no problem. For anything to get shocked, they need to be grounded. Dry ground doesn't ground well.
I did electric fences for awhile but I wasn't impressed! It seemed there were always a problem between weeds shorting it out and the solar battery shorting out in the cold! It was Alotto if work to get it up for not a lot of pay off! Just saying!
Once they get past the learning curve, hogs are easy to keep fenced as long as food is abundant. They can also detect when the fence is turned off.
I raised hogs for a number of years, and always ran them behind electric fences. It doesn't take much to get them used to it, and once they do, they won't even cross it when it's down. Just buy the best box that you can afford, because the cheap ones are just that.
