In Iowa county's they have township trusties.

I've been a trustee since 1982.
Mostly we help fund the fire department, and maintain two cemeterys.

Years back they would buy coal for people to hard up to afford it, and bury those that had no family to do that.

Fifty years back, the trustees choose what mile to grade in the township.

Anyone serve like that, or by another title?

Have you ever been called to do a fence viewing to settle a dispute?

duckcall, years ago, one, that was a screwball deal about water drainage. Plugging up the natural flow of water in a fenceline.

I've been told that the old fence laws are changed, but I need to look that up.
Mostly, there is not time for a formal viewing, and all the time it takes for the process when the stock need to get out on the grazing area.

Not need as much cattle turned out after harvest as was the case years ago.
