What's the best in Mono for 4,6,8# Ultralite spinning these days?
Trilene "Sensation" sounds like it could be good if there's truth in advertising. "low stretch, small diameter, super strong, casts small baits further, sends crankbaits deeper, abrasion resistant", leaps tall buidings in a single bound , etc. Other Trilene lines have worked well for me so I'll probably give it a try.
I've heard the the XL line is good?
I've been away from fishing, however retirement is giving me some time...
Spinning?
Just buy a slinky and twist it on there, that's how it's going to end up anyways.
What's the best in Mono for 4,6,8# Ultralite spinning these days?
Try fireline in #8 or #10 lb test...its #3 diameter, and easier to yank out of brush if need be...NO stretch..
If mono is your thing Berkeley #6 XT.....
Yep fireline is the snit for spinning gear
I run fireline on my ice rig spinners, Good results.
PP...hold the fluff...............
Tried that...we didn't get along...I throw mostly spinners and they tend to roll in the air..the PP was soooo limp ( zero memory) that it would often just get wrappped around the spinner. #10 Fireline has just enough "memory" to avoid most of that...otherwise PP was what initially got me hooked on something other than mono...I liked it...
PP has no peer................
Berkley Trilene XL is what I use. Whether or not it's the absolute best mono made today - I dunno. I like it well enough that I buy it bulk spools and I've quit experimenting with other brands. My best friend is a pro bass fisherman and he's fished just about every mono made. It's his prefered choice of line for spinning reels too.
Braids have their place and I like em' a lot - just not on spinning reels though. To each his own.
Thanks for the info..I was looking at the old Clear blue Stren, but it seems to be made cheaper now...? T XL it is...
I'd not drive anything but braid,on a Coffee Grinder................
Only prob I have with braids on a spinning rig is if it spools up loose then digs into itself on the spool from a hook set.... Hangs up then on the next line release or cast.
But cold weather memory on most monos drives me bat chit loony. (more so than I am naturally)
I spool by having one of the kids do the Burnin' Pencil Trick(though the new PP packages curtail some of it) and purposely over filling the skirt. I then tie it to the front door handle and stroll down to the beach, until I hit the knot on the skirt. The drag then gets yammed to Crazy Tight and rod tip pointed home, while reeling it on with vengeance.
Precludes most all "weirdness" and I'm a pinched finger reeler inner too. That whether it braid or mono......................
My sole Braid Beef,is that it freezes more easily...but it ain't often a concern...............
I'd not drive anything but braid,on a Coffee Grinder................
Same-o same-o here...it allows me to catch stuff like this on a 4' 9" rod, with a Shimano 500 reel...
And I use the same outfit for these...
But lately Ive invested in a 5'6" rod and a Shimano 750...kinda the "AI" version...
Yeah I hear ya on the freeze, Most of my fishing these days is ice fishing and the braid does tend to play a better host to water beeds that freeze on the line, which complicates slip bobber fishing but...
The overall tangle factor is much lower IMO, plus the strength plus the no stretch... It all makes it the better choice for me, especially when fishing with kids that are learning to fish.
For tip up fishing as silly as it might sound to some, my cousin used to run fly line on his tip up spools. I always ran heavy braided nylon or dacron (and I still do)
But I have to admit he was onto something with that floating heavy fly line. It was tough as hell, had good stretch which made it nice for hand over hand pike pulling on 20 plus lb fish, pert neer impossible to cut your hands with the stuff and when you got done hand over handing 30 yds of line and had that pile of string at your feet on the frozen ice, that stuff just wouldn't tangle or ice up like my braided line.
Downside was it really filled a spool, couldn't fit nearly the length.
I said "frozen ice"
Is it Monday in here or is it just me? lol!!
That's like one of my favorites "hot water heater"
Really? It's not just a water heater?
Loomis 11'6" 4lb test IGFA Certified Tournament Noodle Rod,20lb PP/Shimano 2500 Symmetre.
Wrestled through icebergs whistling past, headed downstream with a fury..................
Nice fish guys..Thanks for the imput...I'm looking at warm water here...Bass,Crappie and 'cats for the most part, ultralite with small spinners...My trout come on to a 6 or 5 wt fly rod and little bugs...
PP has no peer................
I have to agree with you there, Power Pro has no peer in regards to the most outdated, over hyped line out there! PP was great line when it came out 20+ years ago but hasn't changed one bit in those 20+ years, it's still a wax coated sponge and once the wax wears off (which happens very soon) it's nothing more than a water soaking sponge. If you like braids there are so many other better options out there than PP.
That'll be tough to top!
I doubt I've banked more than 1000lbs of feesh with it in an afternoon and it wears like iron, though I'll upend a spool now and again, for giggles.
Keep THAT ball rollin, you're on fire!.................
Dat's a nice feesh!
You pizz me off......
Fireline on a spinning reel, Power Pro on a baitcaster.
Fireline is about %50 stronger than it's rated strength, and about 1/3 the diameter of the same mono test. What this means if you need to be using #4 mono, you can use #6 Fireline, have 8-10 breaking strength, and probably 10 more yards casting distance because it is so slick. In clear water tie on a flouro leader with back-to-back uni knots.
Been through it all and I ain't into playin' nice.
I'm talking absolute BLOODBATH on a scale you couldn't fathom. Pass the PP,hold the Fluff......................(grin)
Dat's a nice feesh!
You pizz me off......
Fair fish is all.
This one is about the color I like 'em best,as far as posterity pics go.....................
Little brighter...little "fresher"?
Only place I ever caught steelhead was in the Yakima River...they pale in comparison...
Oh, and BTW, I never seen " Big Momma" but I'm glad Sister took after her, looks wise....
Big Momma ismy Boner Of The Month...every month.(grin)
Easy to arrange catching them on the tide,as they enter freshwater or to cut 'em off in the rain as they're squirting into a system. Though when "too Chrome",pics can border on the blase' sie of things,IMHO. My favorite coloration is a slight hint of blush, with a leetle rose on the cheeks. Very subjective and I'm certainly not pissed when rolling Silver Dollars all day,day in and day out.(grin)
I like this.
This.
This.
This.
Even this.
Mirrors in contrast,have no contrast.

You can stop now....
It's why I'm not Fishing this time home...once I get going,I CAIN'T stop. Gotta get Momma healed and then I'm back in the saddle.
I can grind daily 'til dark, for weeks on end, with a rifle in my mitts and a rifle slung over my shoulder.
It's rough..................(grin)
For conversation...I've done tried me more than one type of line too....................(grin)
Those are great pictures Big Stick! Looks like you are in Heaven for Sportsman!
For conversation...I've done tried me more than one type of line too....................(grin)
Figgered you might have....
Me too...maybe as many as three or even four...
Looking for the pic of when a Line Debate sprung up and someone was "telling" me all about it,so I rounded up all the spools I had on hand for comparison values and in the name of objective R&D grabbed a frame.
Purty funny...................(grin)
Those are great pictures Big Stick! Looks like you are in Heaven for Sportsman!
Nawwwww...sucks. Horrible Winters,no light, constant boredom and no opportunity, except in the peak of Summer..................(grin)
The consumate Cast & Blast photo, from a coupla weeks ago..............
That dog appears to be in need of medical attention.
ROR!!
Tend to get the goody out of them and move on...............
laughin
PP if ya like braid.
YoZuri Ultra soft is a great mono, as is Maxima.
I'm a Chameleon Slut for leaders...until mono gets heavy enough to need crimped, then I tend to Yo'....................
Tried Chameleon when it first came out...I presume it has gotten better since...
It has no peer................
You seem non-committal..I'll check back later....
Results DO interest me.................(grin)
Stick...you ever not use a leader with PP when going for trout?
One shot spool ran empty on me once this year, so I ran straight 10lb PP. I've always used leaders with braid, for trout and the like, but I couldn't really tell a difference.
Been tempted to go a lighter PP, and skip the leader.
Depends upon what's going on and Chameleon is my favorite for gettin' down & dirty,as per it's ability to fend abrasion.
I'm all about numbers,so am hip on PP mainline to a barrel swivel and leaders from there, because I can change quickly to suit what's going on. As an aside,I like hi-vis PP mainline oftentime for Drift Fishin',especially when throwing in with The Gang and going sheer ruthless in high volume pursuits. Easy to see who's where and sort out lotsa feesh being on,all at the same time.
Seldom do I drive braid less a leader, though I will in unique circumstances...........
Stick, those are very nicely done pic's--thanks for posting them.
Some fair, others not so much. Depending upon the body.
Digging the Canon 1D3 as a Feesh Body though.................
Like Firelne for diameter per lb test and no stretch characteristics but tying the lighter weights makes me feel like I have baseball bats for fingers--that is frustrating for me.
Spent some time today changing lines; will use some Fireline but also Berk XL mono and also some fluorocarbon at different weights.
Here a link on some current test..interesting read..!
http://www.gamefishin.com/wa/features/linetest.htm
Did not read all pages, anybody mention p-line.. Ive used for the last couple of years pretty happy with it....
I like Fireline with a 3-4" mono leader bent on with a surgeons knot.
Dynamite hook set with 0 LINE JUMP.
