I absolutely love fall colors. wink If there is a prettier trout/char than a spawn colored brookie, I don't know what it is!

[Linked Image]

Nothing like an ultra light rod/reel and a lit up brookie to cheer up one's attitude.
[Linked Image]

I don't know what it is about a Panther Martin that trout like or hate, but either way I'm sure glad they hit it.
[Linked Image]

The fishing required a little bit of a walk and once on the creek it wasn't the easiest fishing in the world. It was quite brushy and the creek it's self is super rocky. Every darn one of those rocks was covered in moss and slicker than snot. I spent more time trying to stay vertical that I did fishing. Thankfully I never took any really hard falls. While it was a little tricky to fish it was worth it.
[Linked Image]

I made my way back up out of the canyon and back to my pick up shortly before dark. It was a great afternoon, and this sunset was a perfect gift to end the day with.

Quid pro quo!

Im hoping to get to my fave brookie stream next week, but its a long waywee shall see. But we get them up to 18 inches in there with 14 inters being pretty common, so its big fun on the ultralight!

Gonna try a closer stream weds. evening. We don't get the size in there, but we still have the fun. grin

Then next month it'll be browns.. whistle

One more picif PB will let me.

There could be an invite to the Prairie Dog invitational, if there was reciprocity and an invite to that Brookie stream. I have fished small streams all my life and I would love to get a big Brookie to put on the wall...
Posted By: ingwe Re: The Best Fall Colors! - 09/16/14
Shrap.we havent gotten any worth mounting yet, 18 inches is about it. Ive seen bigger ones for sure, but could not convince them to come home with me
Mounting size can be had out of Georgetown Lake without too much trouble

But its a lake.

A couple from No Tellum creek

This one was 17

This one hit 18 on the button

Which one is Brooke?
Posted By: shrapnel Re: The Best Fall Colors! - 09/16/14
18 inch male is mounting size, of course the fishing would have to prove itself before the invitational. There are quote a few guys I would have to convince that you were someone else before they would approve...

Poobah,

You need to quit messin' with bait and catch some real fish. Here's what they look like:

There was once a time when people would pay me for lots of fishing stories, imagine that... There was even a time when it was 80% fishing, 20 percent hunting. Somewhere along the way that ratio reversed.

Dang, this thread is making me hungry. Time to go eat!

Wish we had the opportunity here...
Posted By: WyoCoyoteHunter Re: MORE Fall Colors! - 09/26/14
ingwe, Montana sure has some fine brook trout fishing.. We have some creeks with lots of brookies, but usually the size is quite small.. I may have caught one 15 in. brook in the 40+ years I have fished this area.. Lots of good frying size though.. Fish on..
Posted By: ingwe Re: MORE Fall Colors! - 09/26/14
Over 15" is kinda rare here, but on a good stream you can expect three or four of them in a day.
Posted By: Big Sky Re: MORE Fall Colors! - 09/28/14
I think I speak for ingwe and myself when I say...Life in Montana doesn't suck! smile
Posted By: WyoCoyoteHunter Re: MORE Fall Colors! - 09/28/14
It sure doesn't you have some out standing fishing, hunting and country!!!!

I love catching Brook trout. They have some of the best colors of all the freshwater fish. Here is a Brown Trout I caught in spawning colors.

You folks eat those big browns??? Just wondering.. I practice a lot of catch and filet!!!!
Posted By: WyoCoyoteHunter Re: MORE Fall Colors! - 09/28/14
Also, ingwe, I see you and ingwe wife use spinning tackle.. I need a couple spinning reels.. What is your favorite? You use the same one on pike???
Posted By: ingwe Re: MORE Fall Colors! - 09/28/14
Originally Posted by WyoCoyoteHunter

Nope, we don't eat the browns. Ingwewife likes brookies..I don't eat any fish with fins. And yes we use spin tackle, and I do use the same tackle on pike. My fave is a 5.5 ft. ultralight with an Shimano 750 Sedona on it. This is filled with #10 fire line and used for everything. The fire line has no stretch so you are able to set the bigger hooks into pike.As for the #10 line, its only 3 lb. diameter, and you'll break the rod long before you break the line. Landing them on a UL takes no longer in my opinion, and is a lot easier to wield on a long 100+ pike day.
For rods I prefer shimano but have used WW Griggs,Fenwick and a few others. ( Yes, I DO take spare rods when pike fishingand need them once in awhile!) The Sedona for a reel has been greatI would buy the next step up in Shimano if they made one that sizebut they go to 1000 in the better reels, and I just plain don't need one that big.

Close-up of current outfit.

Posted By: WinModel70 Re: MORE Fall Colors! - 10/02/14
Those are some nice trout. I miss fishing in the Cascades, particularly Slide Lake in Washington. The views were amazing and the hike to the lake was awesome. We caught Cutthroat trout that were 4 and 5 lbs back in 1986 to 1990. I have lost all of those pictures moving from military base to another. Here in Tennessee I'm addicted to catching these monster Brown trout. Yeah, my zipper is down and it's the only pic I got of this one. [Linked Image]

Dude! You are getting it done in TN! Id like to catch a few like that in Montana! ( actually we do, but they are pretty few and far between...)
Posted By: WinModel70 Re: MORE Fall Colors! - 10/02/14
There are absolute giants in this river. A slot limit was put in place 4 to 5 years ago and the trout fishing has improved 10 fold. There are more and bigger fish because of this slot limit. 20+ pounders are seen with regularity, but they rarely bite.

I enjoy seeing the pics you guys post. Brings back fond memories of trout fishing in Idaho, Washington, Oregon, Utah, and parts of Montana. One of my favorite places was in Idaho fishing for Cutthroats in Rapid Lightening Creek using spinning gear and a Daredevil. Just about every cast a trout was on. I can't wait to back out west to do some hunting and fishing.

Posted By: ingwe Re: MORE Fall Colors! - 10/03/14
Are you doing any night fishing? The big ones are a bit more 'available' then...( not that yours aren't big enough! wink )
Posted By: Big Sky Re: MORE Fall Colors! - 10/04/14
WinModel70, Duuuude! I mean that most respectively. That is my idea of a great brown trout! What did you catch it on? How much did it weigh? I'm a little green with envy.
Posted By: WyoCoyoteHunter Re: MORE Fall Colors! - 10/04/14
ingwe, Yesterday, I looked for a 750 Shimano Sedona reels.. They had 500's and 1000's.. I know little about reels.. The thing that seemed different was the gear ratio.. Is the 1000 ok??
Posted By: ingwe Re: MORE Fall Colors! - 10/04/14
1000 is too big for my tastes, but it is what most people go with. If you like the feel of it, you bet!

Nice to hear they are making 500s again.....

Caught this one on a 500 and a 4'9" rod grin

Nice fish!!! Do you ever try Ft. Peck?? One of the few northerns I ever caught was up there two springs ago.. Thanks for the info. on the reels.. I will try and look at the 750's. Since the 1000 is popular that is an option too.
Posted By: ingwe Re: MORE Fall Colors! - 10/04/14
Oddly enough Ive never fished Ft. Peck...but I understand from a number of people whose word I actually trust that it is close to phenomenal.

The 1000 is what most people would consider "Ultralight"...
Posted By: WyoCoyoteHunter Re: MORE Fall Colors! - 10/04/14
I caught two very nice pike in Ft. Peck in late April.. There was a guy there with his family, they had 4 or 5 huge ones, and said they had caught 20 smaller ones.. I hope to return this spring..
What Shimano would be about the size of the old Mitchell 300??
Thanks.
Posted By: ingwe Re: MORE Fall Colors! - 10/05/14
about a 2500...

But I'll warn you...if you try even the lower priced Shimanos, you'll never get downwind of a Mitchell 300 again...

Posted By: WyoCoyoteHunter Re: MORE Fall Colors! - 10/05/14
ingwe, thanks again.. I am going with the Shimanos, probably two to start with.. I am not much of a spin fisherman, but it is a pleasant way to fish.. I just want good equipment..
Posted By: seal_billy Re: MORE Fall Colors! - 10/06/14
Ingwe has steered you right. I have daiwas, abu garcias, quantums and every thing in between and non of the last and stay smooth as long as the shimano spinning reels. I saw where you said all you could find was 750s and 1000s. A 1000 spool will fit on a 750. I have a 750 sahara and a 1000 saros and the spools are interchangeable. The height is the same the 1000 just has a larger diameter. The reel bodies are identical.

If you get a 1000 and want a 750 spool I think I have one. If you want it its yours you can have it. It even has power pro braided line on it that has been fished with once, i will have to find it, its in my cluttered basement. PM me if you want it.
Posted By: WyoCoyoteHunter Re: MORE Fall Colors! - 10/06/14
seal, many thanks.. I will wait until I pick out the reels.. It may be some time, as I will probably get them in Billings.. Won't be up there til after my moose and elk hunts.. Very kind of you.. again thanks.

Hit a high country lake with a troop of boy scouts.
A few of the young ones had never been fishing before, or never landed anything bigger than a bluegill.
Took them out trolling, 2 at a time. .
More fun than catching a 3 lb Rainbow is seeing a kid do it, for the first time.
Lots of smaller fish too. For what ever reason, they are hammering the jointed Rapalas and Rebels right now.
