I found this thumper down at the local gun store. I've heard of these conversions that were common from the 1960s -80s, but this is the first I'd seen and handled.

I hate to see a butchered Mauser, but whoever did this one appears to have done it very well.

The fit and finish is outstanding. Action is slick, and the balance is absolutely perfect.

The full length stock lacks a barrel band, but is fully bedded to the tip and it seems very rigid.

There is not a single mark on the barrel, other than cartridge specification. Just the normal arsenal marks on the action.

Does anyone recognize the work?

Out here in the wide open west, a bolt action 45-70 is under-appreciated, and the price tag showed it.

I just need to find some scope mounts and a box of ammo and hopefully this rifle will cycle well!

Nice Find!

Cool! Looks like an ER Shaw conversion. I had them do one in the mid-70s and it's a nice shooter. Pay attention how you load the cartridges and make sure you put the rim ahead of the one below it. IIRC you can only get 3 in the magazine and make sure you only feed out of the mag.

Good info! Thanks!

Regarding scope bases, do you recall if Mauser 98 bases worked on yours?

I sent in bases for an FN Mauser and had mine D&T for them, but I ended up using shims under the rear base to get it level with the front. I had removed the clip bump on the rear bridge prior to sending it to Shaw and it looks like your has been removed also. Don't know if the hole spacing is different than unaltered M98s or there's a difference in bridge contours? Best to measure yours up and consult base charts.

One of the big regrets i have is selling my siamese 45-70. I went through some health problems and just couldnt shoot it enough.
Still have some loads for it that would make a 95 marlin cry.
That one with the full stock is the cats meow! They seldom come up for sale these days.

A very nice find there. Envious, and I don't really need one.
Nice rifle. I built up several Siamese in 45-70 years ago when the rifles were plentiful. I regret using those, now, collector pieces for custom guns, but back then nobody ever suspected they would become collectibles. Last one I built was for my youngest son's 45 birthday present. Still have one or two actions in my projects bin.

At the advice of a friend that is well versed in 45-70, I ordered from Steinel ammunition.

I mounted a Leupold 4x33 on the rifle, bore sighted it and took it out this evening.

It doesn't group, it stacks!

3 into one oblong hole at 100, so I adjusted the scope for a 150 yard zero and fired 5.

I adjusted 2 clicks down and proceeded to shoot out to 300 yards with hold overs.

This rifle is going to get some time in the field!

That group looks like the gun will be just fine!

Any pictures of the 150 yard results?

How much elevation change from 100- 150 yards, real world not theoretical??

The picture is the group at 150.

With a 150 yard zero, I'm 5" low at 200, 14" low at 250, 28" low at 300.
