My B78 25/06,shoots 1/2 inch, with my crappy handloads and my crappy shooting.
I can't complain.
I think some of ya'll would bitch about a $20 gold nugget stuck in your teeth.25/06 ain't no good, get a 308 instead.......I've heard it ALL now.I used to think this forum was a reliable source of info.

Lucky fer me, ain't fired a factory 25-06 round since about 1980 when I bought a pile of 87gr HP Rem ammo that a local shop had acquired at an auction and sold cheap. Shot them up on whistle pigs that summer and proceeded to load the cases with better stuff. Never had an urge to try 85gr Btips. The 100gr version works so well on woodchucks and our puny PA whitetails, that it's all mine have seen since them things hit the market. Never had the yen for a 308 either, despite the urging of several friends who think the sun sets'n rises on that cartridge. Whenever I get an itch to lob a .308 bullet, it generally flies out of an old 30-06, but haven't had that itch lately either. A bud is trying to interest me in buying one of his newer 6mm-06s: Mod. 70 action, 30" Lilja bull nestled in the original Winchester tupperware (the one with the wide fore end and textured finish). Think it has a VX-II of some sort on it, said he'll take $1500 for the thing, w/dies and a mess of bullets. Don't have any 6mms at the moment, might take the plunge. It'll give the heavy-barreled 25-06 a rest next summer.

The .257" 87PLHP always shot exceptional for me,in all my 25's. Am thinking I'm out,but The Pimp has a few thousand left still. Their BC is horrid however.
I wish Hornady would crank a .257" 100A-Max.
The 308 has never horned me up,but one must concede it's Factory excellence.
$1500 sounds purty steep,to me..................

john,
I couldn't argue PLHP's being a very valid barometer of mechanical aptitude, within most systems...............

Did to me as well, given some of the other "bargains" and favors this particular bud has thrown my way over the years. Some consideration might be given to the rifle being fairly cherry yet, doubt it's seen more than a few hundred rounds. He's had some serious medical problems of late, could account for a high-end offer on this deal, I'm thinking.
Fer the life of me, can't recall what Leupold is on the thing, probably a 24X upper end though and unlike many of his target scopes that get swapped about from one boomer to another, think this one was brand new to the rifle. Reckon them inch and a quarter (?) Liljas don't come cheap either.
He built a 6mm-06 for another friend about 6 years ago, but that guy already had the action and it got a Douglass of smaller diameter, than the Lilja on this 'un. That rifle liked the hell out of 80gr Btips, for 'chucks out to 800 or so. I may need to have one someday.

Back to the question posed..At about 6-1/2 pds a Weatherby Fibermark can be had for about 600-800 bucks..Nice shooting gun.
As to the 25-06/308 debate, I am not a big supporter of the 308 as it bores me BUT as a handloader everyone I have touched by Weatherby, Winchester, Remington and Ruger was accurate out of the box with barrels from 20-24". I have had a 25-06 for awhile now and haven't shot yet but truly look foward to the experience
