I bet it left a mark!
Driving down to Big Sky the other day I saw a dead moose in the ditch, bet that one left a mark as well.......

Mark, As near as I can figure,my huntin spot on the Yellowstone River near Savage,Montana is very close to where Lewis and Clarke fought off the grizzly attack from their small boats. Although that part of Montana is not technically considered Grizzly country today, the Grizzlies don't seem to be reading their maps too well and appear to be going where they take a notion. I don't think I'll hunt sheds this year in the willow thickets by the river without my revolver. I'd rather be a little over cautious than be bear scat.

Doc-I believe you're totally right. Imagine sitting in the stand on the island and watching old Ursus stroll by...?

Thanks for the photos, esp. those of the very impressive feet. A hell of a critter and great to see them coming back.

You guys do realize that there will soon be e-mails circulating with these pictures and some story about a "1,200 lb monster grizzly that was shot 5 times in the face, at a range of 9 feet, with a 30-30, by a one legged hunter after the bear had eaten his nephew, his dogs, and his other leg". Maybe not verbatim, but probably not far off.... Regardless, that looks like a good size animal, and is definitely one that I would hate to hit with an automobile.

Mark-- As you know, there was a great anthology of Montana-related writing released maybe 15 years ago entitled "The Last Best Place." Later on, when Ted Kazenski (Unibomber) was captured near Lincoln, a radio station held a competition for a new state motto. My favorite was "Montana--Last Best Place to Hide"
So I think a bumper sticker that said "Montana-Last Best Place for Hides" would be the next logical step.
