Does anyone know if there is such a thing as a Blue Book for Fly Rods?
Reason I ask, I kinda stumbled onto a Thomas & Thomas rod and find out it was one of only 50 made for Trout Unlimited in the late 80's. I was looking for a reel to put on it and my wife tells me there is no way I am going to use it.

I do not know of a standard, but this is where I go for quick checks and find it generally helpful... http://tradenstuff.com/GearList.htm
IME&O Stuff made for fundraisers tends to be overvalued in the minds of sellers and undervalued in the minds of buyers... art

If one is a collector then shelve it and let the estate worry.
If one is a fisherman, get out there and use it.
When/if I buy a RMEF banquet rifle next week, one can bet I will take it hunting next fall. I don't own a storage unit, so I have to use my stuff.

Over Memorial weekend, while at the cabin in Colorado, I bought a Ross reel and put on this rod. The streams were about 2' above normal level, so the fishing was not good.
Brought the rod home with me and tried using it at a farm pond that the guy had stocked with trout last fall. Didn't catch any trout, but did manage to catch a few Hybrid Bluegill. WOW. The rod is really slow, so takes a little bit of work compared to my St Croix rods that I have been using.

A lot of expensive rods are made for folks with money... too much money to have wasted a lot of potential-income-time fishing. And they suck at casting. A slow rod rounds off the timing requirements and allows a caster to move a little line even if they suck as casters.
That is very much a progressive flex rod and will bend right down into the handle. The big problem is llikely over-powering it and then leaving just enough slack in the system to drop line speed at critical moments such as when the rod is fully loaded.
Your comment about "really working" the rod worries me about it as a soft rod should be easier to cast, though with less distance.
A few things to speed up the rod; Are you sure you have the right weight line? IS the line a Rio? Rios are about a half size overweight to make them quicker to load the rod and easier to cast. Have you considered underlining the rod to speed it up? Is the reel a decent match for the rod weight-wise? Without balance you do have to put alot more effort into starting and stopping the rod/reel with every stroke. art
