My friend was throwing mayfly immitations (#12 thorax grays and olives) to rising fish with nada response. When a fly got wet and sunk, a fish swatted at it. He said he could see that with his polarized glasses and decided to toss out the fly, drag it under water, give it two twitches and let it drift. Then he caught 8 trout in a short while. I'll be trying in a couple days to do the same. Interestingly, my friend gave me a Sage 9" 8 weight RPL rod tonight that someone who fished all over the World gave him. He said it had been to the Merrimache and caught some nice salmon. I never heard of the River, but I guess it is famous. Since the Sage I bought last Summer went back today with a broken tip, this made me feel a bit better.

Are you getting hatches of diving caddis yet? Could it be mistaken for adult caddis flies diving to the bottom to lay eggs? There is a pattern using a bead in the middle to simulate the air bubble the caddis takes to the bottom to breath while egg-laying.

I have to send back my new TFO Spey... the first stripper guide ceramic insert has broken off, big time... They are very good about making it right.

It's absolutely unreal how many bugs there are. There are caddis flys that look like little moths. About a half inch long and white like a little moth with two antenna sticking out the front. They smack the water when they lay eggs. I've never seen one sitting on the water or diving. I see stick caddis swimming once in a while, they remind me of shrimp with all legs kicking and struggling along. If I can get down today or tomorrow, I'm really going to pay attention. The second stocking was yesterday or today and Trout Unlimited is also going to "hand place" trout along a couple of miles of good water. Menhaden are coming into the bay now, and the striped bass will be a very big deal here soon. I'm trout fishing every chance I get for now.

Those caddis flies that smack the water are the divers! Tie a fly about the right size and color with a large silver bead dead center in the body. Cut wings out of clear plastic sheet or use CDCs and a little weight is not a bad idea.

Notice the lime green egg wad at the end of the abdomen, too...

The bead will look like the air bubble they take to bottom to breathe.

Take a look at the bead thorax caddis... That is your ticket!

I had an easy tie that is a killer for those times when caddis are taken just under the surface. I would make a chunky body of muskrat with some shorter guard hairs left in. The wings were two slenderish pieces of duck quill with the curve going downward and almost as long as the body. Next was a bunch of grouse body feathers tied down under the shank and then topped off with a peacock herl head. Weighted or unweighted depending on water speed/depth. Cast far enough upstream for it to sink and use a Leissering Lift technique. Real vicious takes as the fly begins to rise.

Hey Rob,
The Miramichi River is one of the most famous Canadian Atlantic Salmon fisheries around. In the world of Atlantic Salmon fishing, it is one of the easiest waters to get on from both a cost and public access point of view and is pretty darn good fishery too. It is located not far from you in New Brunswick. That rod you were given has some serious karma attached to it. Enjoy!!

On those rising fish eating the mayfly imitation that sank-----if those trout are truly eating mayflies, you can bet they were sucking down emergers right below the surface film. Watch their rise carefully-----if you see fins and tails instead of mouths, that's probably the case. Try greasing your tippet with some gink up to an inch or two in front of a hares ear nymph of the same color as any adult mayflies you see coming off the water. Good luck.
