Tang sight for Marlin 1895 Cowboy .45-70

This is my first post on the site, I think this is the place I can get input that I haven't been able to get by surfing the web. I am wanting a .45-70 lever action for big game hunting, elk mostly. I have decided on the 1895 Cowboy, for its looks and all I have read from other posts about it. I am hoping to get good enough to shoot out to 400-500 meters. But I don't know what tang sight is right for this rifle, I WON'T put a scope on this Cowboy. All input is appreciated, Thanks.

I have a Cowboy with the Marbles sight. I don't think there would be enough adjustment to accommodate a 500y zero. I'm guessing you'd have to go with a veneer sight for that kind of range -- as stated by OSOK.
FWIW, I have the stock rear sight zero's at 100y, and the tang sight at 200y. Works for me here in central Idaho.

Marble tang sight on 45-70 ..... watch out for your eye with recoil.

Marble tang sight on 45-70 ..... watch out for your eye with recoil.
Especially when shooting uphill...

yes, you'll shoot your eye out.
If this is a worry then I recommend going with a nice Skinner aperture sight http://www.skinnersights.com $45
Not traditional but very nice and compact. These are similar to the popular XS sights at about 60% of the cost.

The Williams is a nice sight, but as stated, "not traditional", although they were put on all sorts of rifles. Marbles has changed their tang sight line up now. You buy a base, then the elevation screw, then the top. The elevation screws come in different heights, including a tall one for longer distances. Check out thier website for details. I prefer the Marbles over the Lyman, as the former is adjustable for windage.

I forgot! Plus 100 on the front globe! IMO they are the best. For longer range work, I recommond a level, either on or at the globe, or installed in the rear sight dovetail. Gotta watch that cant!

Welcome to the Fire! I had the same quandry and elected to put Brockman's sites on my 1895 XLR. They sure work for my old eyes! But I agree, I think a tang site on that Cowboy would be great!

thanks for all the input. I ended up going with the Marbles "Improved Tang sight" It looks good and is well built, I'm not sure how it will perform yet I've got to get to the range and get it zeroed...now I just have to pick a range to dial it in at for the elk hunt. I'm thinking 250yds or maybe 300. I just hope it ends up being repeatable.
