AkGrayling and I took a rod building class this past winter. It was 6 weeks and I'm just now getting around to finishing the rod. Of course I had lofty ideas of what I wanted to do, so it took me quite a little more time. I snapped a few photos of the process. It was a tedious adventure, one I don't think I'm likely to repeat. Maybe after the pain wears off....
First, glue up the cork for the handle.

When the glue was well dry, turn the handle.

Here's Ak working on his handle. Unfortunately, he turned his a little too thin, and it broke. He still needs to turn another.

Each guide needs to be sanded to make nice and thin so the thread wraps will gracefully go up each foot.

After marking the placement of each guide, they are placed on the mark and held with little orthodontic bands.

Of course I used a traditional and conservative color combination.

In addition to metallic thread, my other "fun" thing to add was a feather inlay. Total, there are 7 feather in my inlay. It turned out pretty well, I think. Of course I had a lot of help from Art and Riley. Thanks, boys!!

I still have several coats of finish to put on it, so when it's complete, I'll post a picture of it. Hopefully, with some fish slime on it!!!

Great job folks! I built a rod years ago from a Cabela's kit and had a ball. But like you said it does eat up time. You can save a lot time by buying an already made handle though. Can't wait to see the finished rod! (PS-Tell AK he has skinny fingers like me)

Miss T,
Very cool Mother/Son project/experience. I am still waiting for enough time and patience for rod-building and Tai-Chi!
My Dad built a bunch of rods, spinning, casting and fly. His are more utilitarian. Not pretty like yours. But we have used them with complete satisfaction for years. One of my most prized fishing rods is an old Harnell that belonged to my Dad's father, that my Dad rebuilt.
One of my cousins took a course on building split bamboo fly rods. He's built a few. I haven't really done alot of fly fishing, but this is something that has is very intriguing.
I can't wait to see the pics of your and AK's finished rods.

Ah, a Mearns rod. What weight, length and action blank? Reel seat? Is Riley already adorned with night club tattoos?

Chris, I too have an old fishing rod, belonging to my father. Definitely not fancy or custom. But it IS the rod of choice when on the boat and fishing for ling cod. We call it the "Green Hornet." It's the bomb!!!

I knew you would recognize the Mearns. It hard to see them but there are 4 mearns feathers in the inlay. I'm quite happy with how it turned out. (but of course I have a very untrained eye...)
Both Riley and I are building 8 wts. His is a TFO 4 pc, mine is 3pc GLoomis. Nothing fancy on the reel seat, but Riley is doing invisible wraps. He hasn't put the finish on yet, so I'll get a picture of the "before" and then I'll get the "after" and show you how cool it is.

M, When you epoxy over the feathers, will you wet them first with some acetone or something to help eliminate any air bubbles? I like the feather inlay idea.

We put them down with shellac. Hopefully, that will take care of the problem. Also, when applying the epoxy, the solution was mixed with equal parts A and B along with the same amount of denatured alcohol. It seemed to work pretty well. The instructor of the class said you could do that for the first coat of finish, then go without the alcohol. However, he said he had seen the best results using the equal parts solution throughout the whole finishing process.

Building the first one makes numbers 2 and 3 go five times faster. As to color.... PINK??? Must be a pink salmon rod.

ifn you like pink then pink it should be. when clemens was open, i went there one day and bought a tip from a nine foot 4 weight loomis fly rod. i put a small cork ul spinning reel seat on it. i then let a little 4 year old princess pick out the wrap threads. it is purple and pink wrapped eyes. she caught a ton of sunfish etc with the little rod that daddy made for her and stood up to her abuse. still have it in the cabinet and it aint going anywhere. when my friends see it there are no smart remarks. all that was over 13 years ago and your pink brought back the memory. thanks

Thank you! I've put a couple of coats of finish on it, I need to knock down the bumps from a little dust, another coat of finish and it's done.
