LOL---I actually still have my original GI Joe doll from back in the 60's, came with a green wooden foot locker. Probably worth a few bucks I am guessing.

I particularly dislike the cera-kote jobs over stainless steel, what a joke. Yep, it seems the way to go is Cerakote over CM. It's supposed to work better than on SS. That's my plan. If it doesn't rust, it'll look better to me than any other coating. ;-)
I've been told that the Cerakote acts as a lube and the action should be smoother after coating. We'll see how that claim holds up I guess...

Does it matter what metal it used on, SS vs. CM???

Cerakote is good for actions that have "slop" already, that is, loose tolerances that contribute to a lack of smoothness by binding. Because it adds to the dimensions of any part it is coating, cerakote can fill in that "slop." That is why it works so well on factory Remington 700s; I would think that a Rem 700 with a sleeved bolt (oversized bolt to eliminate slop) would not take well to cerakote. If I recall correctly, another forum member had a problem with a cerakoted Surgeon or Stiller action awhile back for precisely that reason: the action was so finely fitted that the added coating caused it to bind.

mmmmmmmmmOK.........................back to the original topic.
I have a safe full of model 70's, guess you could say I have a verifiable addiction. Never have cottoned to the venerable m700, Tikka, etc. Give me an old-timey mauser action -- with a wing safety -- any day!
- some are deeply blued with nice figured walnut & a high gloss scope, for high & dry days when I'm feeling nostalgic
- some are stainless and turkish walnut / Serengetti laminate for 85% of normal duty -- just personally like the look
- some are composite (Edge or kevlar) and Cerakoted stainless, for those trips when I'm away from camp for 3+ days and concerned about lots of water...be it from rain, river crossings on horse, or snow. Then all I need is a small bottle of lube and my boresnake in my pack.
Is it a bit neurotic to want to know I have the highest degree of potential corrrosion protection? Sure, but that kind of attention to detail, and the grace of God, has gotten me to where I am today. Ain't changing anytime soon (at least on my end).
But the smoothness of the M70 actions was never affected in any lasting way. After a bunch of rounds, the coating usually wears down a bit, as on the recoil lugs.
Best of luck! Rich

Skane and conchworker, and Dennisinaz,
Thanks for the real world(experienced and informative)advice that you've given here. Just the kind of first hand knowledge I was looking for.
I had a Ruger done in Cera-kote a couple of years ago. It looks great still and was a definate improvement on that rifle as far as the action was concerned.
But that was a Ruger not a Model 70.

Lefty-
As a fellow lefty with a Winchester 70 looking to rebarrel, we are in the same boat. As Doc said, choose wisely. I had Fit 4 Duty do my Montana 1999 built with whatever they apply. Not a good idea. No,the action was not as slick as a factory Win 70, but the Durakote worsened things. I have a beautiful rifle with a very schitty feel of the bolt that take a good bit of muscle to work. I am not sure what the options are, and am interest in whatever you find or try.
Maybe Durakote has a special bolt process, but I wasn't aware of it. I would certainly like to know if my bolt can be stripped and coated with a different process. Now it wears lots of lithium lube, and the cycle still sux.

Does it matter what metal it used on, SS vs. CM??? Hey RD. Well, I've not yet gotten an action coated, but this is what Doug from Ultra Coatings (www.ultracoatingsinc.com, you can contact him from the site) said when I asked him about CM vs. SS:
We coat all metal except the chamber,we can do the bore on request. (See Ultra Bore coat on the web site) Prep for CM or SS is the same. I see no advantage to SS. T/C found our coatings gave better rust protection on CM than there SS. They call it Weather Guard. To prep we plug the bore and chamber then blast with 100 grit Aluminum Oxide. Doug The only potential advantage to SS might be the inside of the barrel, but either Ultra Bore Coat or attention in the field will take care of that.

Dura Cote is a two part epoxy paint and offers no lubrication. We don't use it anymore.Even though Fit 4 Duty isn't around anymore,if your not happy just send it in and I'll strip it and CeraKote it for you.No charge,it will be slick and you'll be happy.
Dennis, how are you liken that Blue Titainium?

I have cerakote on the bolt of my 40x and like it enough I plan on sending my M70 to Doug once it's all done. Will report back.

Doug, will there be any issue with cerakoting Williams bottom metal?

I have a model 70 push feed that has the Black T coating and I have had zero issues with functionality. The Black T is a little more money compared to the Cera Kote so I may try that if I decide to coat my other rifle.

I had a M70 with Williams bottom metal Cera-Koted and didn't have any problems.
