I am interested in buying a high quality .22LR bolt action. It will spend most of its time target shooting, but I don't see why it couldn't also be a fine rabbit hunter. I'd like it to be the kind of rifle that I'd want to hold onto. I've looked at:
Anschutz 1710D HB Classic Meister Grade
Cooper 57M
Kimber .22
CZ 45 something, I can't remember
I would think it would likely come down to the top three, unless there are other suggestions. The CZ was nice, but not in the same league as the others, probably a nice shooter, but the wood and the metal work weren't comparable. The Cooper that I like is the one that is a step up from the Classic and that is just about the very top of the budget. It has the glossy blue action, not matte. IMHO, I think matte is a cheap way of avoiding putting on a nice smooth finish. I can get the Anschutz 1710D for about $1600 or so, which is where I would prefer to be.
I would like to hear any comments that you have and any other suggestions out there. Keep in mind, I want this to be a special rifle that I'll hold onto. I'm not into quantity, I'd prefer to have fewer guns of better quality.

My vote from experience would be an Anschutz 22lr. They are not things of beauty with exquisite fit and finsh, but they will flat out shoot. About 4 years ago I acquired an Anschutz 64, and wish I had picked one up 30 years ago. The 2-stage 1-ounce triggers are absolutely wonderful, and caused me to rework triggers on nearly all of my other units.
Like every rifle, they are ammo specific. I go through several thousand rounds after our local ground squirrels, and both my Anschutz and Ruger 77/22 do well with Federal American Eagles and Winchester Power Point ammo. Not well with CCI, Rem, other Winchesters, or any of the lesser known speedy brands. Given my shooting volume, I have not tried the high end target ammo, due mostly to cost and ready availability.
With minimal wind, I can shoot groups at 100 yards with the 22LR that rival some of my center fire units. On squirrels, I try for head shots out to 75 yds and score consistently enough that a local hay grower will furnish ammo if I shoot his fields. Seems to be the brand one sees most often in competition too.

I'm leaning in the Anschutz direction also. I think there might be a little more value for the money in that rifle. The model that I looked at was beautiful. Maybe they're starting to pay more attention to their styling. This one had AAA walnut stocks and a very nice finish. Still sort of liked the Cooper also. I guess I'll just have to make up my mind, either way it sounds like it'll work out very well.

You might want to add a Sako Quad to the list. It can be had with a 4 barrel kit in either synthetic stock or Walnut. Comes with a 22mag.,22lr.,17HMR,and 17m2. The barrels will change out in about 20seconds and the accuracy is unreal. This is a photo of my Sako Quad Hunter model.

I've got a Sako Finnfire that I'm very fond of, but my next rimfire purchase is going to be a Weatherby MK XX11. If you like the looks and feel of a Weatherby, this is the gun for you. It has a barreled action made by Anshultz, with the fit and finish of a Weatherby.

I have never seen a Anschutz that shot any better than my $200 CZ 452 Training Rifle.. and that observed by some stauch Anschutz owners at our local range...
Even at 2 or 3 times the price, the CZ is a very accurate rifle with a big rifle feel to it...

I have to give you credit on that rifle.. a 52 B or A or C is definitely one of the best High dollar 22s, and is worth the money...
There was a group holding matches over here at the GP range 4 or 5 years ago, The meets were 200 yd matches with 22 LR ammo..
They had different classes to compete in.. but finally they made a rule that no 52 Winchesters were allowed to be in the competition... they had to reluctantly ban them, because they were beating everyone else hands down continually...
I sure wish I would have bought one of those Browning Repro's when they were available for about $500.00....

The NY Kimbers are sweet, but the OR Kimbers are a bit more in demand, and Im told more accurate although I have never shot one. I own 2 Kimbers, a Super America and a Classic, both are crazy accurate with Wolf MT ammo and have great looks. I REALLY want a Cooper some day too.......

I have held a couple of the new Anschutz. Very well made, beautiful, but some people might have different tastes. It's modern, glossy, figured wood, perfect checkering. And $650.!

Agree completely. I have a CZ-452 full stock that will shoot 5 shot groups (with the Eley or Lapua ammo it likes) of .33 inches at 50 yards. That being said I covet a Jackson Squirrel rifle that may not be much more accurate but is certainly a higher quality rifle.

I have a few CZ452's, full stock and american stock, all of which shoot Federal 38gr like it is match grade. The best shooter is the 452 Style synthetic stock/stainless, shoots dime size groups at 100m's from a range bag rest. The Kimber hunter is a great choice, finnicky with ammo, only shoots well with match grade in mine.
Don't have the others to comment on.....

I honestly own own 20 to 30 very nice .22 rifles. I have had a chance to shoot and handle most models. Unless we talk about having a Full Blown Custom built on a nice action with expensive wood, my first choice would be the Cooper "Western", however, the most beautiful rifle for the money, in my opinion, is the Kimber Super America. I have one that is very accurate and "Drop Dead Gorgeous". It cost me about $2500.00 less than the Cooper. I like the traditional American style, when it comes to bolt action rifles. We all know that Anschutz are wonderful firearms. It is simply a matter of personal taste.

Tom,
1 more opinion. If you want something really nice, consider a Blaser R-93 with a rimfire barrel. Not cheap, but what is these days. I have 2 complete Blaser rifles and love them.

Dont give up on you're HS yet Coop!!! Mine took some rounds to really be super accurate. Its the most accurate 22 I own now!!

I'd take an original Winchester Model 52 Sporter---you've got, in my opinion of course, the best of all 3 worlds: accuracy, beauty and collectibility...
