I went out shooting with a family friend yesterday and it was a blast! (no pun intended) we were shooting his 6.5-284 I think it was called. anyway it really got me hooked on precision shooting. I lack the money to have a set up like he has, but I'm looking for info on how to go about getting some used equipment perhaps? is there a website that sells it? mainly looking for an action and a barrel, but I have no idea where to look, besides getting new like my buddy does. are some actions better than others? short, long does it matter? I've never built a custom rifle, but what I would like is a 6mm or 6.5 that I can shoot at 600 yards fairly well. no competition yet for me, but I want a rifle I can learn on before I try to bump up to something fancy. even if I can't afford it now, just researching it is enough to tame the itch I have now. thanks Ryan

Surf on over to benchrestcentral.com and check out the long range board there. And then the classifieds. And then shooter's Corner as he has a ton of used, good stuff there.
6mmbr also has an active forum, and I see many actions and barrels for sale there as well. Good place to ask questions, too.

If you're at all interested in competition - and it really is just a lot of fun - you'll need to figure out if you're going to shoot benchrest or prone. Big difference. Both are challenging and fun.
For info on both F-class (supported) prone and conventional (sling only) prone, go to http://www.long-range.com
You'll also find LR discussed heavily at http://www.precisionlongrangehunter.com
Warning... It's addictive! Regards, Guy

Yep, ain't a bad start IMHO. 308 is fine or you can put a different barrel on fairly cheap too. But for starters a decent gun is all one needs, work forward from there because you never know what you might end up doing in reality. I bought an M14 years ago becaues I wanted one... it ended up taking me to national matches for about 20 years....I never dreamed of that...

If your serious about 1000 yard guns, I've got a couple in 6.5x284 that will be for sale when I get stateside in june. I've got probably 1000 pc of brass, new and 1 fired. Redding Competition dies, sights, scopes, bullets, ect. The only thing is, they are single shot prone guns by MAK.Don't know if your'e interested, send a PM if you are. Thanks,

I just sold a 1K BR rifle in 300 WSM that shot 5 screamer groups (4.00" and under), set two club agg records, tied a world score record twice, and won all of the matches I where I shot first relay and half where I shot second relay. All that occurred in around 9-10 matches after I figured the load out. I sold the rifle--minus scope--for $2K.
Blaine, no offense but that begs the question:
WHY!?

The 6mm's and 6.5's that are competitive at 1000 yards will only have a razor-edge accuracy life of 1200-1700 rds. However, a good .308 will have accuracy life to as many as 3000 rds and sometimes more depending on twist rate as well as the bullet weight you shoot. Recoil factor of the 308 vs the 6.5/284 is a wash although the 6.5 is of slightly shorter duration (sharper).
The 308 will force you to read wind more and in that game, wind-reading is what wins. Over time, shooting the 308 will teach you how to strategize wind better.

I decided on a remington 700 short action to start. I'm still looking for a stock. I'm keeping the BDL bottom because I would like to use the rifle for shooting varmints too, and I want the ability for a rapid follow up just in case any ideas? I want to keep the stock under 200. I was thinking a B&C medalist, I like the pistol type grip. I've always been a fan of thumbholes too. how are stockade stocks? are they hard to finish if you get the unfinished ones?
