Friends-

I recently purchased a unfinished stock for a M-1917 Enfield Sporter. It's probably a 95% inletted stock in an American Classic Pattern. I love this pattern but, there are some things I would like to change.

I want to make a couple of patterns off of this stock with some minor modifications. These modifications would include altering the area around the safety to allow for an after-market three position safety like a LaPour, as well as, leaving the bolt "slot" un-cut as this stock has the slot prepared for the M-1917 Enfield/ Rem. Model 30 dog-leg bolt handle. Lastly, I probably want the cheek piece reshaped for a "pancake" type cheek piece.

Now, I am guessing I need to come up with a couple of plain jane blanks to have these patterns made from.

Who would you recommend to make a pattern or two for me???

Thanks in advance.

Would it be a problem for you to use the existing semi inlet as your pattern? Cut down the excess wood with the usual chisels, rasps and gouges, and build up where you need more "wood", like the bolt cutout, with Bondo and/or Acraglass. This way, you can fix your mistakes before you send the pattern off to the machinist.

That is the technique I have used a couple of times. Then you could use Shane Thompson, Soda Springs ID, for the duplicating. He would even have some wood to sell you, to cut down on shipping stuff around.

Lansend and utah708-

I would actually like to save the integrity of the existing semi-inlet for either the use in a project or I might possibly sell it.

Mark, sometimes you gotta bust a few eggs to get a souffle. But, if you're dead set on saving the stock, call Henry at GAG and tell him you need a pattern stock. He'll cut you one for about $100 or at least that was the going rate before $4 a gallon gas. When you get it back "fit" the metal to the wood. Don't be too meticulous about it as this going to be your pattern. After the pattern is inletted for the stock glassbed the action in. Do a good job on this as it will be the guide for your new stock. After that start shaping the pattern. You can add epoxy anywhere on the stock you want more material. Just add it on, let it dry and shape it. Using this method you can change anything on the stock you want to. Below are some pictures of a great example of what I'm talking about.

See the stock on the left? notice the sprig knot in the magazine area. IMO this stock is worthless because of where the knot is.

Got lemons, make lemonade! I needed another pattern for a guild rifle and this stock gave it's life to make it happen I liked the pattern, but the forend needed to be much shorter and I wanted to try a few different things on this one.

Here is the begining. I inletted the barreled action in and cut about 3" off the forend.

After that I glassbedded the action in and started adding things. Here is a nice shelf for the bolt release. It's made from epoxy.

A raised pedestal for the the Talley swival base.

I put a new schnabel tip on and finished shaping the pattern. I took wood off in some areas and added it in others.

After all that, the pattern and blank are shipped to the duplicater. He chucks that ugly multicolored pattern in his machine with a pretty blank and goes to work. Here is what you get back.

A little more shading and finishing and you get a nice stock. You can see the shelf I built out of epoxy on the pattern transfered to the stock in this picture.
