While I was layed up in the hospital conjugating latin verbs, I decided that I would treat myself to a new toy when I got out. For awhile, I've been telling folks that a CLR/NULA hybrid looks, on paper, like a great value, so I've decided to plunk my $$ down and will test the theory. I'm looking at buying a NIB CLR in 30-06 and then sending it off to Mel, along with $968, so that he can install a NULA stock and a stainless NULA (Douglas) barrel. I'm leaning toward making it a 25-06, as that seems like the most practical sub-.308" bore for a long action, non-magnum, deer/antelope rifle, but am open to suggestions.

Seems like a fine plan. If you find a better donor with a magnum bolt face, you could build a 257 Roy. The end result would be much the same.

Sounds like you are pumping around $1500+ into the project. I would just buy a used NULA for slightly more.

ss barrel installed and an edge stock fitted $1000. add action of your choice....  mel's chit is schweet.... if he is doing the work you get your moneys worth for sure. i dont care if he is bedding your savage....

Not a bad plan. I have two CLR's with Mels' stock. The ONLY reason to rebarrel is too get what you want as the factory Saco barrels are good. Both of mine shoot VERY well. 270 and 300WM. I have contemplated rebarreling the one of them in either 280 or the mag to 257Roy but.......

What will the rifle finish at Weight wise?
How much does a CLR weigh to begin with.

That's why they have horse races, I guess - everybody likes something different. Me, I like the NULA trigger, and his safety keeps me from losing the bolt in the woods by locking it in place.

I can say the trigger is not bad on my CLR's, feels about 3lbs, and I am believe strongly that a Timney trigger that is in the ULA/NULA will swap right into a CLR for what about $100, add a douglas bbl and a Kevlar stock should you choose, and you are STILL half the cost of a NULA. Personally, I if I were to pay for a custom bbl, it would not be a douglas, never have had one and won't, just my preference. If I were a gunsmith, I'd use and recommend others based on a great deal of feedback I have heard over many years, by many shooters. I am sure they are not bad, but most all barrel companies are close in price. Get the best if you are going custom.
Re: the CLR bolt, I have 2 rifles, they each lock when on safe just like old style 700's. How do you suppose a CLR would 'lose a bolt'?
My point is, I don't think a NULA is worth 3k, much less is it worth paying 5-6x more than a CLR when under most field conditions, I truly doubt a shooter can hold the rifle well enough not having a sandbag type rest to tell any potential difference in accuracy. I read a guy who had a 30-06 and got 3/4" groups with a CLR, and many other reports like that, but if someone wants to pay another $2500 OVER what a CLR can be had, for whatever perceived benefit over a CLR that is their choice.
Handled the NULA's at the 2007 SHOT show, and they were alright, but nothing jumped out and said to me, 'wow, what a great rifle for 3k!'
Now a CLR, you get rifle that at 6 1/2 lbs which is light enough, and you CAN steady it better than if you were to go any lighter, a fine matte finish, nice smooth bolt operation, and a nice Sako extractor, hammer forged bbl that owner's report very good accuracy, and a decent trigger, not to mention a synthetic stock that is free floated and has a nice feel in your hands.
BTW, just checked my CLR on a scale, 52 ounce trigger, so 3 1/4 lb pull from factory, not bad......
To 260 guy, Jeff, before you do what you said above, I'd find a CLR in a caliber that gets the job you have in mind done, and try the factory set up 'as is' because I don't believe you will see a big increase in value or performance by spending money getting one 'NULARIZED'
Just my opinion. Not a knock on NULA's work, but I work hard for my money...and look for a product that gets the job done, and provides a good value at a price that does not break the bank.

I've had a CLR action, bansner stock, LW barrel. In the end it was a fine rifle but it took traveling a bumpy road to get there. I had several QC issues which involved obtaining parts from Colt. Luckily at the time Colt still had a parts inventory remaining and I was able to obtain everything I needed from them. Its a good thing because aftermarkets are not available. That was several years ago and I'd hate to know I had to depend on it now. That said, since Melvin's building the rifle, maybe he could make some of the NULA parts work should you have a failure.

My buddy is having his 2nd Nula built. Very nice rifle but I do not think they are 3 grand nice. He has both of his stocked with Banser's. The CLR/NULA might be the way to go if you wanted one. His trigger is a Timney with a ULA safety. He switched his out to a jewel. It dropped right on my 722. The safety has given me some problems. The arm that goes into the reciver slot must be tapered so that the corner does not hang up. Once I got the 2nd safety sorted out it has been a very workable unit.

Roads, Mel has parts. My 300 has had the ejector spring, follower and follower spring replaced from Mel. Prior to me. The 270 is bone stock except for Mel's stock and not sure why you would need any upgraded parts. Work over the trigger and go.
I think the 10oz saved with the stock is worth $400. Still under a grand for a "well balanced" 6lb (bare) rifle. Neither of mine are bedded and both shoot under an inch with at least a couple hunting bullets. Partitions/accubonds/Interlocks.
In the custom gun world Mel's rifles are very fairly priced but a CLR with his stock is still very good at $900-$1000.

None of the 4 cartridges chambered in the CLRs really does what I want done, so I need to rebarrel and the 25-06 seems like the best solution in the CLR's long action.
Mel told me that the barrels on the CLRs are very good, but I've never been a big 270 or magnum guy and I already have a dozen or so rifle chambered in 30-06. If $$ was the primary driving factor in my decision making process, I'd probably opt for a Marlin XR7 and hope that I could buy a lighter/stiffer after-market stock for it in a year or 2.
