I am building a 358Win. and have acess to a 1-12 and 1-14 twist barrel.Which barrel is best for all bullet weights 200-250? The contours and weights are close w/one being .625 at muzzle and the other .650 at muzzle. powdr

The Ruger I just picked up has a 1-12" twist, but I have yet to shoot it. Can't imagine it not working.

Powdr,

I once built a .358 Win with a 1~16" twist. Knowing that the standard twist for a .35 Rem and .35 Whelen was 1~16", I assumed that the .358 Win was, as well. BIG MISTAKE! I've been sorry ever since.

Every subsequent .358 I have built since has had 1~12". I wouldn't consider anything other than 1~12" as long as 250 gr. bullets are in the mix.

Now, if you don't intend to shoot 250 gr. bullets and you are looking to shoot cast bullets, then I'd consider 1~14". But NEVER 1~16". I've never tried the 1~14"... Just might have to build one and see how it works... \:\)

Going with the consensus.
1-12 in both of mine as well.

1/12 in my .358 win. I've only shot 200's through it and they clover-leaf.

I keep seeing people put up great groups with 250's in their CDL's in 35 Whelen....which has a 1/16.

Is there a recommendation difference for the Whelen vs the Winny, and why?

Hate to go against the grain but I think 1:14 is a better choice with 200gr to 250gr bullets. With 1:12 your rifle will shoot 310gr bullets. You dont need that. The 1:12 will slow your fps down and add pressure to your loads..

Ive got a 358 win that is twisted 1:12 and loves the 250 grainers and Ive got a 35 whelen that is twisted 1:16 that only groups the 158-180-100 grainers well, this whelen with 250 grainers ranks along side a 12 ga. with buckshot in 100 yd. groups.............

That was my experience with 3 Whelen 700 Classics with the 1:16 twist also. I don't know if 1:14 would be quick enough for the slower .358 Win.
Myself, I'd go 1:12.

I have an 18 inch 358 Win with a 1:14 twist barrel.

My buddy Bert has an 18 1/2 inch with 1:16 twist.

His brother, Jerry, has a 20 1/2 inch with 1:16 twist.

All three rifles shoot 250 Speer spitzers into less than minute and a half to 300 meters.

I would build using the 1:14 and expect the same.

Either 1:12 or 1:14, no wrong choice here. I went 1:12 with my 350RM but wanted to have the capability to shoot the 310gr Woodleigh.

I would go 1:12 if using the heavier range of bullets and 1:14 if using bullets 225gr and under in the 358Win.

A couple of years ago I built a 35-284. I knew the general standard twists were 12", 14" and 16". I wanted to generally shoot 225 gr bullets so I chose a 1 in 14" barrel. I get right at 3/4" groups at 100 and generally I get 1 3/8" at 200 yards.
That is shooting a 225 gr. Sierra Game King. Nosler are almost as good.

I must disagree with you. When Winchester brought the .358 Win. out onto the market, the twist they chose was 1 in 12". Who should know better than those who designed the cartridge?
I have five rifles chambered to the .358 Win., three bolt actions having that idiotic 1 in 16" twist and which do not group worth a damn with anything suitable for deer or larger game, and two lever actions witht he proper 1 in 12" twist that will group close to ot right at one MOA with everything I've run through them.
To add insult to injury, I also have three rifles chambered to the .35 Whelen, two with that idiotic 1 in 16" twist (Thanj you Remington and Ruger for your stupid azz choice of twist.) and someone's custom job that I picked up at an estate sale that has a 1 in 14" twist. Even before I had that rifle rebedded, it was outshooting the Remington 700 Classic and the Ruger 77RS by a decided margin.
Currently, I am having another .35 Whelen built up, this time it will have the proper 1 in 12" twist.
FWIW, when shooting any of the .358's with the load I have decided to use (well over book so that info is classified) I see no apparent difference in pressure signs. I believe whatever difference in pressure the faster twist might create, it would be in significant for the most part. I've been shooting those .35's for almost 20 years for whatever that's worth, but I do think it gives me a decent working idea of what they will and will not do based on barrel twist rate.

The 358 Win. is a hunting cartridge. We are not selecting a twist for bench rest here. The twist selected should be on the fast side.

Down the road more and more bullets may be non lead and the copper substitutes are less dense requiring a faster twist.

So select 1-12" and be happy.
