I'll be plying the waters beyond Resurrection Bay come Monday in search of the feisty and tasty halibut. This will be my 7th trip in 20 years ... only wish I could go more often. Residents of the 49th State live in paradise (5 out of 12 months). I will also battle any King salmon that shows interest out there.

Be sure to keep the 'cheeks'...the 'tenderloin' of the halibut.

Let us know how your trip went. I've heard the fish are late in returning this year, so you probably had to run out a ways to get into them. I'm thinking I need to head out of Seward in a week or two to chase the same critters.

Gents,

I got back last Friday. We fished four days (Mon-Thurs) and we limited every day ... no chickens! We were out about 26 miles and fishing at 270'. Now the amazing part ... every day was sunny, 72-75 degrees, and flat seas! There was more chop in Resurrection Bay from the north winds than out at sea.

We fished a full eight hours each day and it took us that long on a couple of days to get the two fish per person limit (three of us). We fished with Saltwater Safaris and they took real good care of us ... including filetting the cheeks.

The biggest fish was 108 lbs and the smallest we kept was 45 lbs. Most were between 55~65 lbs. Great eating size. We ended up with over 400 lbs of filets. We also caught a few black bass, red-eye, and one "white" King salmon. My arms are still sore.

Sounds like a great trip! The weather was steller last week, wished I'd been able to put in some more time running the rod but we were on vacation.

I'm planning to run out of Seward next week or the following week, I'm looking for a weather window.

Don't suppose you took gps coordinates of where you were fishing \:D

458 Lott ... Sorry, the captain wouldn't let us near the GPS. Just look for one of the Saltwater Safari boats (Legacy, Legend or Double Trouble) floating out there by themselves. They've been going to the same spot with all their boats and they are usually the only ones there. Other boats were heading farther east and not doing as well. We left Resurrection Bay and headed east for about 18 miles. We were about 1~2 miles off shore in 270' of water. I can't remember the name of the shore point we were fishing off ... if you know the name of these points, I'd remember if I heard it again. That's the trouble with gettin' old first your memory goes, then ... awe I forgot what's next. ;\)

We went bear hunting, but spent one day fishing for Halibut, the fruits of our labors on relatively calm seas...

Paul,
If you've got the wx, run west to Harris Bay. Lots of Ling/Salmon Shark to be had on the west side of Granite Island, and great anchorages inside Harris. Stay to the east side of the morain to get into Harris Bay, once you go over, fish the 165ft mark. Lots of halibut there on an incoming tide.....or used to be anyways.

Bill,

Thanks for the tip. I was planning to go out this week, but my wifes car is in the shop, so I need to stick around town until it get fixed. Then I just need a weather window.

Dave and I have logged many successful hours fishing West out of Seward, while the bulk of the mosquito fleet fished East. If you plan a trip down there, give me a shout at work and I can give you a few areas. This was several years ago, but I'd bet most of those areas still see little fishing pressure.

Paul, I can give you some Seward spots as well. I won't be fishing in Seward much this year, if at all. I am running charter boats out of Deep Creek this summer......it's nice to be breaking someone else's stuff for a change.

Breaking other folks stuff isn't the big deal, it's having somebody buy your fuel that rocks!

I'm burning 35-40 gal of gas a day in the charter boat I'm using... What's your burn?
