Anyone else doing this? I use gas check wheel weight bullets, and modest loads of 24oo in my 8mm Mauser. A buddy shoots nothing but cast lead in his rifles now for range time. I chrono about 1650fps and average 3" groups with the crummy Mauser open sights at 100 yards. I don't hear much about people doing this. It's too bad. For simple range time, it can't be beat. There's plenty of noise, modest recoil and superb accuracy. I saw a 200 yard group from a scoped Springer 03A3 that went right in at 2 inches!!! One can push them up to 2000fps easily for modest hunting as well.
Guns & Ammo Surplus Firearms edition featured an article I wrote about this last fall, but I never hear anyone else talking about it. A pound of 2400 will give you over 400 rounds in most milsurps and it even works in AKs and SKSs with no problems to the gas actions.

Dan,
I don't do this myself but there are a lot of guys who do this. Check the CBA (Cast Bullet Association) and you'll find folks doing this in postal matches and scheduled events.
Data and records are available in their magazine which is bi-monthly, I believe.
I've played with stuff from the 22 Hornet to 416 Rigby, some at jacketed speeds. None of my stuff is mil-surp though.

Dan, you sound like a candidate for the Cast Boolits site, if you don't already go there.

I shoot gas checked, water quenched WW cast bullets in my '96 Swedes and my 30-30 Marlin 336. Good performance from both if you don't try to push them too fast. Cheap (I have lots of WW ingots and uses less powder) and lots of fun.

Nope...don't go there. Actually, I'm not a died in the wool bullet caster. I cast for my .45-70 and my 8mm Mauser. I'm a real minimalist when it comes to bullet casting. My methods would be viewed by true bullet casters as voodoo. I don't even own a lead thermometer! I cast from a Coleman stove; have no idea of the temperature and wouldn't know a hardness tester if it bit me on the butt! I just have fun.
But thanks for the link.

Dan,
Alot of the guys on the cast bullet sight are more into casting as many good bullets as possible with the least amount of work.
I like the simple approach myself, I've never used a thermometer, never had my ww alloy checked (or added anything to it) nor have I ever weight sorted bullets. If they look good they get lubed/checked and are shot. If they look bad they get melted down to make more good ones.
All the milsurp rifles I've had had junk bores. I do enjoy mild cast loads from my .308 and 350 Rigby.

Oh cool! How do they do that, is there a special tool or just punch it until it looks good?

There is a special tool, as you have to punch it out and then to make it into a flat 'cup' if you will.
