On a recent squirrel shoot I was missing about 99% of my shots with the 17hmr. Needless to say the savage spent the day in the truck.
I got it out today an papered it. Was surprised on how far the scope had been knocked off. The barrel was also pretty dirty, once it gets to a certain point accuracy goes to hell. However I had never done it on paper before. I found it interesting, an figured I would put it up on here.
50yards, 5shot groups. From a bench with bi-pod an rear bags.
Group 1 was finding where it was zeroed. Groups 2 and 3 were with making scope adjustments. Go figure I was missing. I wonder what I hit the scope on.
Now it gets interesting IMO. Before I shot #4, I scrubbed the bore with an oiled brush, then oiled patches, ran a mop down it once an called it good. There was still some oil left in the barrel though.(theres a 6th hole as it was my aiming point)
#5 is also 6 shots but getting tighter as the oil burned off.
Finnally #6. The 2 flyers were my last shots and were my fault.

Looks like that gun does not like to be too dirty. Might want to soak it in some wipe-out and get rid of any copper to, I had a 17HMR that would go all to crap after a few hundred rounds even with a good cleaning if I did not get the copper out. But it was a tack driver when clean.

I recall reading that 17 are more sensitive to dirty bores.
Here it is: http://jamescalhoon.com/19caliber.php
I haven't tested this myself, and take it with a grain of salt.

Then I would have to buy a paper bag to put over my head so nobody would reconize me.

Speaking of hijacks...
During my brief career as a college student I had the pleasure of bunking with some long legged Russians(women) for a semester or two. Wild fur, perfume and miniskirts galore.
Okay, we only shared the same building and elevator but they always smelled like flowers.

Not too impressive at its best. Either the rifle or ones technique still needs a little work. One should have nothing but ragged holes at that range (50 yds). Keep working with it and things may come around. Maybe a different brand of ammo will make a difference.

If you are under 500 rounds through your barrel, it may still be a little rough and will collect its share of copper fouling. Give it a good scrub with a copper cleaner and you may be surprised by the improvement in group size. I have found that 17 HMRs tend to be ammo sensitive, just like many rimfires. After you address the copper issue, try a variety of ammo and you are likely to find a combination that makes your rifle a 1 hole wonder!
The only 17 HMR or 17 HM2 that I haven't been successful in getting to shoot 1 hole groups is a Savage 93FNS, the light weight barreled and synthetic stocked version. It just doesn't shoot good enough with any ammo, but I bought a close-out Ruger 96/22 17 HM2 barrel from GM that I'm going to fit to it and expect good results from the rechambered GM barrel. I have seen the same thing with the light barreled Marlins as well. For whatever reason, the heavy barreled Marlins and Savages have all been good shooters, while the light barreled versions have never shot quite as well. OTOH, the light barreled Marlins in 22 Magnum tend to shoot groups equal to the heavy barreled versions. Just another mystery of life.

Fifty yard, 5-shot group, from bipod/picnic table rest. CZ rifle with 3-9x Leupold & Hornady V-Max ammo. I was pleased.

as far as copper fouling in a .17 hmr goes, you don't get much if at all. the rifleing is a micro groove and just doesn't copper foul much. however they do dirty up quick and some are fine with it and some are not. if you do use a copper solvent i do not see a need for the extream stuff.

I've shot 5-600 rounds without cleaning in a day and never noticed any drop in accuracy. In fact, I've never run any sort of brush through my CZ Varmint with roughly four thousand rounds down the tube. I just use solvent soaked patches pulled through the bore with a homeade boresnake and only rarely.
I've noticed a difference in accuracy from lot to lot even when using the same ammo. I had a brick Federal V-Max that would punch dime sized 5 shot groups @ 100. The next brick of Federal V-max I bought was closer to an inch for 5 shots. For the most part all the ammo with the V-Max bullet shoots very well in my HMR and like 1minute said, ragged holes @ 50 are pretty common.

I'm way way way over the 500 round mark. This savage seems to like the TNT's best. And anything with a V-max is patterned.
We did end up bedding and floating it before it started shooting decent.
However I dont believe its the most accurate one that came outta the factory, thats for sure. My paper shooting skills dont help much either.
