Spent the late morning/early afternoon at the range. I'm trying to consolidate powders lately and was hoping TAC would be a good one for me to shoot out of all my .223 bolts and AR's as well as my .204 Ruger.

My .204 just loved TAC under a 40 Vmax with CCI BR4's and R-P hulls. 26.0 - 26.4 TAC with an OAL of 2.27 gave me 3 4-shot groups at .3". These groups were shot with a 2-7x32 scope.

The 26 grain Varmint Grenade wasn't quite as good with TAC. 27.7 - 28.3 gave me the best accuracy at a shade under an inch. Okay I guess but not acceptable for this rifle.

My WOA .223 loved TAC as well below a 60 grain Vmax. Accuracy from 25.1 - 25.5 grains with a 2.25" OAL hovered again at .3".

Think today's range session verified I can go ahead with a couple of 8 pounders of Ramshot TAC.

Posted this as there have been questions lately regarding TAC, the new lightweight Varmint Grenades, and some folks not having accuracy with the 40 Vmax's out of their .204 Ruger's...

TAC burns extremely clean and meters like water but we already knew that.

My digital took a dump a month ago and I have not got another so you'll just have to take my word for it...grin...

Don...
I know, there is no excuse...
I've been crazy busy and shot a rifle I've had for 3 weeks today for the FIRST time if that says anything...

That and it's off-season for dead animals and the camera is on the back burner....grin...

Is anybody trying the exterminator or just going with TAC? I used TAC for the heavy .223AI loads but have gone to using exterminator for all of my 50gr and under loads in .223.

Re: .223
What were your results with X-Terminator? I have used TAC with 52 to 80gr bullets with good results but bought some X-T when Midway had it on sale for $10.99/lb thinking it would be fun to try with 40-55gr bullets.

I was getting great velocity and accuracy with minimal fouling. The only reason I dont use more is its hard to find. I guess I will have to splurge and order a 8lb keg and be done with it.

What rate of twist is your rifle?

I have a CZ 527 with a 1 in 12 twist and I'm having trouble getting the 40's to shoot.

Thanks,
Hawkeye

Same 1:12...
It is a very tyoical thing you mention. Some shoot the 40 Vmax, some doesn't...

Mine does, very well at that...

Try the 35 Bergers if you're looking for a killing bullet...

Greg,

Thanks for posting up this load data. I will be dumping some TAC under some 60 grain BT's this weekend for my AR's. You gave me some info. to work from in addition to what I had already researched for working up a load for this bullet/powder combo.

Mohawk.

I snapped pics of one of the groups just today. I'll download them tomorrow and post them here...

One of the TAC groups out of my .204 under the 40 Vmax is downright obscene. I measured it at .284" outside to outside tonight. Subtract .204" and well, you do the math...grin...

Here is the aforementioned group.

.284" outside to outside out of my .204 Ruger with 25.5 TAC...

26.4 TAC was also very good at around .3" as I was dealing with a setting sun and a bad glare so they may have "improved"...

I bought a 8lb keg of TAC and loaded up some .223 for my AR with 1:8 twist and with the 55gr v maxes the 25.0 load was a ragged one hole with 5 shots. I need to load some more between 25.0 and 25.5 to see if I can find the sweet spot as I had them loaded from 24.0 to 26.0 in .5 increments. The mid-whoever varmint bulk box 55 grainers shot best at 25.5. I just wish you could buy the 55 gr v max in bulk at a deal because when you load 1000 the 250 pack is a little pricey but if it shoots like that....who cares?

0.5 is too large a jump when you're dealing with 25 grains of powder IMHO...

I was jumping .2 - .3 at a time...

Greg,
I just found this thread, and have questions. First, how well did your rifle shoot the 40 V Max's with different powders before you tried the TAC? I'd love for my LV SF to shoot them, but so far all it will do is "pattern" the 40 V Max bullets with any of several different powders I've tried. I'd gladly buy a jug of TAC to see if it made a difference and would allow me to use the several hundred bullets I've got sitting on the shelf.

First powder I tried with the 40 Vmax 1D...

If your gun is patterning the 40 Vmax's and not even grouping whatsoever, you probably have 40-Vmax-.204 Ruger syndrome.

That is, some guns, more than a few, just won't stabilize the 40 Vmax for whatever reason. My suggestion is if they shoot very erratic switch bullets and don't waste time with them. Try the 39 BK's. Since you've tried the 40 Vmax with multiple powders I'd definately switch bullets no doubt...

Greg,
My rifle loves the 39 grain SBK's with Benchmark, but the SBK's are too fragile(lots of splash wounds) for our coyotes and eastern groundhogs. I'm shooting the 40 grain Bergers over H4895 with great results. My rifle does not like the 40 NBT's either! I was just hoping that the TAC might be the magic powder that would work with the 40 V Max's.
When I rebarrel this rifle, it will have a 1 in 11" twist!!!

I hear you about the 39's although I've never even loaded one up. I recommended those based on others who have issues shooting the 40 Vmax's switching to the 39 BK's and finding success...

When/if I draw a conclusion on the 40 Vmax and run another bullet it will be the 40 Bergers. If they behave/kill like the 35 Bergers do then they may just be the perfect bigger critter killing bullet for the .20 cals...
