My buddy and I took our 10-year olds down to La Paz last weekend for 4 days on the boat. We caught 5 good-sized dorado/mahi mahi/dolphin fish, but had no hook ups for marlin or pargo.

Here is my son, Michael, with the first catch of the trip - a skipjack.

Here he is fighting his first dorado, with help from Cap'n Chris Jones -

This is the one he was fighting - also in the picture is my friend's son, Joshua, and Chris.

Here are the boys, each with their first dorado.

This is the first day's catch -

This is the biggest dorado caught - Michael fought it for about 40 minutes before handing me the pole to land it. You can see how sweaty his hair is. (Ignore the SPF 45 smeared all over my face...)

This is Cap'n Mike, driving the boat

This is the boat we were on for 4 days and nights - pretty small for 6 people! We were very proud of our boys - no fights or arguments despite the cramped quarters.

No, they are good kids actually.... ;\) \:D \:D

It was fairly unusual to catch that many large ones, I was told.

I take kids out all Summer. I've even taken out some of my students. I find they enjoy looking at the sonar more than catching fish. The think reminds them of a video game. I usually get a broken rod or two a season (a kid stepped on one Striper fishing yesterday) and a lot of ceramic tips broken from winding swivels up into them all day. That aside, I see it as part of my mission in life to get them out from behind their computers. It's a big deal that you're getting the kids out there. Good for you.

Those are some awesome bulls! Never caught dolphin...spent lots of time offshore of the Texas coast though, and we go after King and Ling. In the bays, we go after Specks and Reds. You guys had a good trip...congratulations.

If you had one of those rare Model 700's with a multi colored McMillan stock chambered in something AI in the pictures you'd get more comments. Oh, by the way, nice fish and cute kids.

CA Hunter,

Our paths crossed last week in LaPaz....had to.

I've fished with fishermensfleet.com for two decades....best kept secret in the fishing world.

We had fantastic dorado fishing along with several large cubera and we caught a few striped marlin regardless of our efforts to pull the bait away. Roosters were numerous.

We participated in a small tournament conducted by David Jones of Fishermens Fleet and Lynn Rose Tours.....raising funds for a seniors home in LaPaz.....a great time for a great cause.

Your kids couldn't find a better fishing coach than Christopher Jones.

Hope to see you there some time.

CA Hunter,

Your photos are alomost too revealing.....upriggers [photo 1 contraption above the skipjack] and Fred Archer spreader lures are unknown to most of the world....outside of Fishermen's Fleet at least.....they work amazingly well.

Nice Dorado, aka Mahi Mahi in Hawaii! Next time you're trying to get into the marlin, rig up that first fish as bait! Put a line behind the eye socket and tie off the hook to line on top of the head. Find the school of fish and troll that baby just on the outside of the school ... those big boyz won't be able to resist!

Very nice dodos! Congrats to the dads for taking the kids out, and to the kids for reeling in some serious fish.

SOrry for the delay in replying - the skipjack got away. Chris somehow managed to drop it over the side of the boat... Mikey wasn't too happy about that, being the first fish caught and all. It was okay, though - if something was lost, I'm glad it was a skipjack!

Neat pictures! Great way to get your kids excited about fishing and give them a memory they will always have.

I have nothing constructive to contribute but when I saw La Paz, it reminded me of Butch & Sundance:

"Next time I say we go someplace like Bolivia, we go!"
"Next time."
