wife is tossing around the idea of a dog for fathers day-and I'd like a bird dog-hunting dry west Texas land in search of quail and pheasant!! She likes the english setter, but I keep telling her short hair is a must! This will be our first hunting dog, so what should we be looking for? (she has also looked at english and irish setters...)

My wife's father has breed both from trial dog linage. It's a close match for "perfect family dog", but the GSPs are just better bird dogs in my experience (Dixie Land pedigree). I'd pass one the Irish due to bloodline issues akin to what happened to the Cocker Spaniel.

I didn't know there was another kind of dog than a GSP....currently have a 2 year old at my place and a 6 year old at my parents place. Wish we had quail around here like dad spoke of back in the 60's and 70's.
Dad had Irish Setter's as a kid that were supposedly out of this world as far as hunting ability. He switched to shorthair's though for the same reason as prostate8 mentioned.

I was just in your exact shoes, trying to decide between a GSP, an English Pointer or an English Setter. I wound up putting a deposit on an English Setter though. of course the hunting I'll be doing here in Northeast is completely different than you. I'll be doing a quite a bit of grouse and woodcock hunting, so the setter made better sense to me, as they are natural cover dogs. If I was in your area, you can't go wrong with a GSP, or an English Pointer. Good luck with your search and do your homework.

You will shoot yourself if you get a setter and spend half the day cutting burrs,cactus and stickers out of the fur. The GSP is the most versatile dog and if you train it right you can duck hunt with it too. We love our three GSPs. Good luck

I love GSPs and that would be my first pick but a nice English Pointer would be tough to beat too!!

he's going to an acquaintance. he has an 8 year old female gsp. hopefully having another dog to play with will help him burn some energy.
the up side is that i'll still get to hunt with him a couple times a year.

Nothing wrong with a GSP. But... Seems like everybody and their brother here has one. I can understand why though, They work and work hard.
This coming from a Setter loonie.
I'm still biased towards my Euro-Gordons.

I just goy my second one. I had the first 40 years ago. he seems very smart, and naturally does hunting activities during play.

I used to raise, train, breed, and mostly hunt GSPs (got my first, Bradley's Ole Man Tucker, in 1989). Well, I say train but most of them were self taught, natural hunters. I still have one, but with our bird population here in mid-MO so depressed the last few years, doubt there will be a replacement for this one. I've had some that were calm demeanored, wonderful family pets and guard dogs, and some that were a little too amped up for my taste. Almost without exception, they have hunted hard and had above average noses, most naturally backed and retrieved. Even though short haired, their coat is much denser and thicker than an English Pointer, so generally they aren't quite as tolerant of the heat. Any of the short haired breeds, including a good hunting bred Weimie like the feller above, touts should do you a great job. My very first bird dog was a Brittany, and I agree with the earlier posts, a longer haired, softer coated bird dog can be a PITA to remove the cockleburs, beggar lice, stick tights, and other nasty things they can pick up while hunting.
