Paintball gun suggestions?

I received an email from a good friend's girlfriend asking about paintball guns (she is thinking about getting him one for his birthday). She knows nothing about paintball guns but knows that he really enjoys going paintballing when he goes. He is currently a casual (couple times a year) paintballer, but he might go more if he had his own gun. I don't really know anything about paintball guns myself and thought I might be able to get some input here that would help her out.
Thanks.

Is he going to play woodsball or speedball. I am a little partial to the Tippmann 98 for recreation or woods ball. Affordable, super reliable, super upgradeable. I think the ready to shoot package(sans balls) is from $139 to $169. Gun,mask, air tank, tools, hopper
http://www.PBreview.com is a good website for opinions on all things paintballl

If he's only going a few times a year, anything by Spyder is ideal. Reliable, cheap, and it can accept major upgrades (Barrels, internals, stocks) if he ever wants them. Generally, I'd recommend avoiding electric guns; they're very, very, very unreliable in my first-hand experience. If he wants something that he can make into whatever he wants if he gets serious, a Tippmann 98 is the only way to go.

I'm glad you posted that OneGunner. I was going to say my nephew runs a spyder with a J&J barrel and it is a really good shooter, nice looking, suprisingly fast, and quiet, for not much money. Hasn't had any trouble yet.

They're good beginner guns, and the price is right.

I second this sentiment - Spyders are a very good value. Also worth looking at Tippman A-5's which aren't really that much more expensive and can be tricked out to the nth degree.

Thanks for the input guys. She ended up getting the Tippmann 98, and he was very happy with it (he told me that's the one he would have chosen if he had bought it himself).

Anytime JustOneGunner.....LOL. Seriously, after I fined tuned it after only 500 rounds I put 20k rounds down range in two days...flawless. To answer the original post, anything made by Tipman is perfect entry level. Great deals on Ebay with great upgrades. They are the AK-47's of paintball guns....Dirt and abuse have little effect.

Maybe you did, but every electronic marker I've seen had a lot more functional issues than mechanical guns. I also see them getting serviced at the pro shop a lot more.

I went from a Tipman to an Eblade Autococker about eight years ago. The salesman stated an electronic gun is like a race car, you almost need a personal mechanic. He was right initially but the tune-ups are easy and much info on the net. I actually became a pretty good airsmith and build Eblades from scratch.

I went the cheap route because I'm an old fart and don't play enough to justify putting big bucks into my gear. I bought a used Tac 5 Recon, and have had pretty good luck with it. There's not much in the way of upgrades for these-they're a very basic gun and easy to work on. I put an aftermarket barrel on it and a butt stock, but other than that it's pretty much straight up. Two concerns with these guns: it's hard to use the offset feedneck assembly-the gun chopped way too many balls with that in place, and the trigger doesn't seem to be upgradeable. I'd like to get a few more BPS off this gun, but I just can't work it that fast. I only play a couple times a year, and it works fine for what I do otherwise.

I don't play "paintball", but got a Tippmann98 in order to chase deer away from eating up my landscaping each Winter. They get desperate because they have over-populated a 200-300 acre woods/fields/scrub bushes & tree area ajoining my property that is owned by the local school board who won't allow hunting of ANY kind back there.
As a result, the area is over-run by deer which, in the Winter, starve due to over-grazing their area and, as a result, begin eating up everyone's landscaping.
The paintball gun, loaded with brightly colored paintballs, make a good "anti-deer" device if used often and effectively. I've gotten several solid "hits" with the Tippmann98 which has an off-set paintball container which makes using the built-in iron sights on the Tippmann98 easy to use and increases the number of "hits" on the target... and while they're "crude", they DO give the shooter a better chance of hitting his target... even at longer ranges.
I've turned the "pressure screw" out to considerably increase the paintball gun's muzzle velocity and am currently getting well over 300 fps (not usable on paintball courses due to it's high velocity) which not only increases the gun's effective range, but also increases the power at which the paintball hits (and "stings") the "deer".
This, in turn, caused the deer to start AVOIDING the area around my home and, thus, the majority of my landscaping.
Whereas we use to see a half dozen deer every day saundering through the mowed part of our property we call the "yard" (over an acre) in front and behind the house... we rarely ever see any deer in that area now.
Soooooooo... the "paintball treatment" is working... and it's fun as well as it is very much like "still hunting" when I take a "stand" out on the patio!!!
I've even worn my camo varmint hunting cover-alls with the camo baseball style cap a few times... and had the deer within 20 feet of the Tippmann's muzzle... UNITL the shooting started, that is !~!~!
Strength & Honor...
Ron T.

Good tool to use Ron. If you upgrade and hit the deer with 10-15 BPS, not only will they not come back they'll tell their friends:)
