I have hunted black bear DIY in SE Alaska 4X now, with very good success. All trips have been during May. We have a cabin and a skiff.
One of my friends was unsuccessful this May, and would like to go back to try for a FALL black bear. From reading other posts, it appears the bears are hunted mostly on the salmon streams in the fall.
Does the first week of Sept. make sense for a 1 week hunt ?
Are the temps and rainfall about the same in early Sept. as early May?
Bugs ?
Any input will be appreciated.
Thanks
Todd

Where in Southeast?
Call the local fisheries biologist and find out when the coho run in the streams you can reach from your cabin with your skiff. If the coho will be running, you will be golden for bears. And can have some great fishing too.
Temperatures should be higher in early September than they were this May. Rainfall could be significantly less, or more. It is Southeast, after all . Bugginess will depend on timing of frosts. Could be great; could show a need to invest in DEET futures.
You are way ahead of most, since you know the area and have experience with tides, currents, weather, etc. Biggest unknown, which is easily knowable, is the timing of the fish runs. Wouldn't hurt to check on clearcuts and other sources of berries in the area -- when the bears aren't on the fish they are in the berry patches laying in the carbos.

If your looking at hunting black bears in September you might want to think about watching the blueberry patches as well. I've a few spots that I watch every fall and usually always see bears feeding on berries.

Bugs are pretty damn sporty, especially around the salmon streams. I generally hunt the cuts for fall bear.

Thanks for the input.
Can we still catch the Dungenees Crabs as in early May ?
I am taking for granted the salmon fishing is great, how about the halibut - any around in Sept ?

No problem on the crabs and halibut fishing should be fine also, course they will have lots to eat that time of year.
Silver's will be the salmon of choice that time of year.

SE AK is a large area if your cabin is in the Juneau Area you'll have coho in fresh water for sure and some dogs around. Halibut and rock fish there will be good numbers in Icy striaghts out to Cross sound. Warning if you are planning to go thru South pass you better know what you are doing. As it can get stacked up there. The mouth of Idaho Inlet is a good area as is Home shore. If you can't get that far Stephens Passage should fish well as should Lynn Canal. if you are in Gustavus well you need not go far at all.
