As a warning to all out there, I bought a Big Mario Batali cook book and noticed that he uses anchovies a lot. I was at Federal Hill in Providence yesterday at a place called Venda Ravioli and saw a lady buying a bunch of anchovies. I asked if they were salted. The salesman said they were the good, packed in olive oil, very nice... He gave me one. I tossed it in my mouth, and started chewing. I was greeted with the single worst flavor I've ever encountered in my life. I don't know how people eat the little fishes. I could taste it after a pack of orbit gum, and a hearty tooth brushing. I even woke up tasting them today. It took a lunch of Mexican food to finally get the taste out of my mouth.

Anchovies are like wine. They can make certain foods taste better, but if you can tell they're there...you put to much.

.... Worst food item evr for me wuz "Pork Slices w/juices". The absolute WORST c-rat meal ever inflicted on US soldiers. Nah, Ham and Lima Beans was the worst, but Pork Slices was close.
The worst thing that I ever tried to eat was dried squid.

The worst thing that I ever tried to eat was dried squid. Guess I'll hafta agree with the Ham & Lima beans, being that for some reason I can't recall the "Pork Slices w/juices". Overall though it would be a dead heat between them and some smoked eel I once tried as a kid.

Different strokes!! I love anchovies!!! 'Specially the Sicilian ones! Worst food item evr for me wuz "Pork Slices w/juices". The absolute WORST c-rat meal ever inflicted on US soldiers.
I agree, especially with that congealed glop all over them. It gives me the shivers just to think of it...
Funny, I went through Basic at Ft. Jackson in 1981. While on bivouac, we ate "hot" food, which meant C-Rats in a garbage can of hot water. One of the guys in my squad got Ham and Limas. The drill Sergeant looked at that and told him to go get something else since these were out of date. Then he commence to telling us how bad they were when they were current.

I just had a bunch of brussel sprouts. Going four days where the only thing green is the bread will do that to you.
