Hello fellers. I am making plans for a May 2009 black bear hunt in BC. Barring any small disasters that seem to haunt my hunting trips what can you boys tell me about hunting BC? Thanks, reflex264

Not hard to find bears any where in B.C. outside of the lower mainland. In the spring there are two basic types of hunts, spot and stalk where you drive into different areas and then hike while glassing clear cuts and slides and the more expensive coastal hunt involving glassing from the boat and then trying to move in when you spot a bear. A guy like me would find the boat hunt very boring but you might not. Which type of hunt do you think you would prefer most?

The hunt is a spot and stalk which is what I prefer as well. Don't know the exact location at the moment other than North Central BC. Will have more details later this week. reflex264

If your a non-resident you will need to hire a guide. Black bears are larger in the coastal areas or islands. You'll see more black bears than rabbits if hunting the northern half of the province. Baiting isn't allowed. What else do you need to know??

As has already been mentioned, if you're a non-resident, you will need a guide. This likely means that your guide will know the area you will hunt and be able to get you onto bears. Some hunts use dogs, and they can be somewhat rigorous. Your hunt more likely will be spot and stalk. There are plenty of black bears throughout the northcentral area of the province. Bring enough rifle to put the animals down with authority. Shots can range from way out there to very close. Dress for the weather. Spring weather can be unsettled, especially depending on where you are hunting. Good luck.
