We had to put down our old lab recently and I have decided to get back into the pointing breeds again. This will be our first Wirehaired Griffon and we are very excited. I would like to solicit input from the Campfire on an appropriate name. Please vote for: 1. Retreat 2. Ozzie 3. Max
I like the thought of yelling retreat while out hunting. Being a French breed, it is my first choice. Please vote early and vote often. July 18th is pickup day.

He's a really cute pup. I'd call him Griff but of your choices, I like Max the best.

30338-first off sorry to hear about the loss of your old friend, I went thru that with my old yellow (Jake) a year or so back now. It still stings but the memories out do the sting for sure, Jaker and I ran the hills for 15 years together.
I am interested to hear your thoughts on the Griff, that is one breed that my wife and I am thinking about, one cause I think they look cool and two cause they appear to shed a bit less than the labs.
Of the names you mentioned, for me and my style no doubt I'd go "Ozzie"!
Good luck with the lil rodent and please put up pics from time to time.

This is our first pointing breed since our last Brittany. The consensus did end up being Ozzie here and most importantly at home, so Ozzie it is. We are hoping to get him on planted and wild pheasants this fall. The ones I have been around have a wonderful disposition and after the normal 12 months of chaos, hopefully he'll grow into as good a companion as our lab was.
Mark, We're getting him from Spruce Creek Kennel here in Delta, CO. One of his sisters is headed to Montana on July 18th. I'll keep you posted as we go along on how its working.

Ozzie is a good name, can shout for "Oz" in the field.
My brother in law has a shorthair and a wirehaired griffon, their names are Cain and Abel. If I ever get a pair of dogs at the same time needing named, they're going to be Pancho and Lefty.
I had a shorthair named Max, supposed to be the most popular dog name out there. Current two are Shooter (girlfriend named him after Shooter Jennings) and Doc, short for Murdock (of the A-Team). Had a shorthair as a kid named Scoob, short for Scooby-Doo, I was 4 or 5 at the time he was named, go figure. Dad/grandpa/uncle had an Irish Setter farm dog when I was young as well, my sister named him Frog-she was just learning to talk and my uncle asked what to name the new dog, and the dog became a Frog. Had another one named Squirt, that was on the ragged edge of my memory, and I don't think I want to know how my sisters came up with that name for a dog.
Sorry for the hijack, but a lot of good memories there.

A rancher friend has a female and she sets in the passenger seat very noble looking and stares straight ahead even if you walk up to the truck and talk to her.. Its hillarious!! I think "Sarge" everytime I see her..

...He looks like the strong silent type, so name him in honor of Clint Eastwood, just change it to Clint Beastwood! Another possibility would be "Gabby" after Gabby Hayes (the bearded/ unshaven unkempt look you know..Or he could be "Birdbrain" like my passed on now English setter..

Ya' feel kinda' like a little kid waintin' on Christmas dontcha'?
I take it the breeder is keeping in touch, sending pic's and such. That's a good sign, they care about where thier pups are going.
Good luck with that little carpet shark.

I try to honor the heritage. Mine (GWPs) have been Mona, Annie, Sophie, Gretchen (Gert) and Moe (Howard, based on a resembalence) Any name that does not sound like a command, ("Teal"/heel, ect)(pard's was Kiser). I would call yours "Spot" Do not rush them, I know it is hard to slow down the process... but your kindergardener should not be chopping wood. They ere are puppies for two years, you can break their spirit if you rush the training. Best wishes, nice doggie! Bill

...Another thought. With the beard thing going for your dog why not hang "honest Abe" on him?

Here is he at 4 weeks packing around a pheasant tail. Found a place close to home that has couple of fields for training. Reading all we can right now to make sure we approach the training with Griffons correctly.

30338, check out the folks over at VersatileDogs.com . Several of them over there have Griff's and would be happy to offer advise if you need.
