I'm not an elk hunter and I don't know the Craig area so hope you will not find this to be a dumb question. Is it possible to stay in a motel in town and commute daily into decent elk hunting territory? Jim

A canvas wall tent with a woodstove is livin' large... Gotta agree with Jeff on this one, I couldnt imagine going elk hunting without camping......its part of the hunt afterall. Not to mention you can actually get more sleep camping as you would already be out there and not have to commute. Showers???? thats why I try to camp near a cold stream.

Personally, we camp in a canvas tent in close to the area we hunt.

We camp near a trail head and hunt horseback, its convenient and logical if you know the country and/or can find the right place. We use wall tents and stoves...

As for a 5 day season and 8 day booking, one could use the other 3 days to scout or rest up after the hunt.
I live in the center of deer/elk country and just trying to hunt out of my house is totally exhausting. Way too much time is lost in tending to house chores and travel, and one does not get a good nights sleep due to the early rise. Tried it twice and couldn't handle it. We got elk, but it was in no way relaxing. I may only camp a few miles out, but rest assured, I'll not be in a rig or back to town until the group wraps up the season.
Camp is the only way to go. We get plenty of sleep, better and more food than I would eat at home, and we're hunting as soon as the rifle is in hand. While I've seen deer and elk from camp, I've not shot one from there yet. I did drag the wife out of the tent in her underware once about 20 minutes before sunrise to drop 1 of 3 bucks about 150 yards out. She did pause though for about 30 seconds to scope out the dozen elk that were between the tent and the deer.
For those that don't know, Craig and the Steamboat area are destination resorts. Great party towns, but not where I would go to escape civilization.

For that kind of coin you could pick up a wall tent setup or rent yourself a camper. Or thow an ad on craiglist for rooms needed on such-and-such days, you never know.
Maybe you could get a drill rig worker to sublet you his hot cot in a mancamp....eeew.

Usually myself and a Grandson sleep in a 12 X 14 cabin tent with a wood stove, while my son and his 2 kids sleep in a 9 X 12 low wall with a kerosene heater. A friend sleeps in his camper and everybody comes in the cabin tent for meals. Sounds crowded but we have it arranged so that the beds flip up against the walls and then we have room for seating everyone Pic below is a summer camp.

It depends on where you're hunting in the Craig area. There is plenty of high timbered country on three sides of town to the north, east and south. However, if you're in the sage to the west of town, you won't find much timber for the woodstove, but you certainly will be knee deep in grow mud. Meaning you want 6 feet and grow 6 inches. It's nasty stuff. An RV near the blacktop works there, but tent camping can really suck. There is a KOA on the east side of Craig with good facilities, including cooler and skinning pole. I set up there once with my Lance camper when hunting a January cow season on private land west of Craig. We had the entire place (both the KOA and the ranch) to ourselves.
There are several smaller hotels in town that may be cheaper than your first try. Google Craig, CO and look for hotels and start calling. Otherwise pm me and I can give you a list.

I don't like to drive a lot, I don't like to get up at 2am or 3am to walk a lot either. We put on backpacks, a small tent and start into the wilderness. We sleep when it turns dark and or set up the tent once we find the elk. Then we stay with them till time runs out, they leave, or hopefully one day we kill one of the dang things...
Motel would never cut it and wouldn't seem right either.
Now the motel on the way home, shower and clean up, and a big steak out in E Colo is right nice.
Jeff

Elk and canvas.......the perfect combo.
I've shot 2 bulls from within feet of my wall tent in the last 10 years, one not 5 feet from the meat pole.......gotta like that.

Either wall tent or backpacking with a small tent. Although I have an awful good friend in Flagstaff that I have stayed with down there. His wife is an excellent cook so it is worth it when I get drawn down thataway...This year it will be a backpacking trip and a little more roughing it, with freeze dried food on the menu. I will stop in Missoula on the way home for a night in a motel for a shower and dinner at The Depot...

long ago I learned to live out of a back-pack and sleep where ever night found me quite comfortably with a minimum of equipment, out in the field, (especially in snow) using a good quality sleeping bag and a plastic tarp, and an inflatable pad, I do ocasionaly rent a hot shower in town or take an ICE COLD dip in a creek , to keep the B.O. under control, but being very comfortable takes some skill and experiance and planing but its not something the average guy can,t do if he sets his mind on the goal. Ive spend many nights in lean toos or makeshift shelters and am none the worse for it even on sub zero nights

My partner has some prostate problems that require 5 or 6 nighttime trips to the loo. A tent is too slow. We use my old 20' self-contained camper that's been about everywhere and on any kind of roads. We can't get quite as close to the elk as with a tent, but it's darn comfortable.
