I gave my friends a bunch of D2 and had them draw a knife they would like me to cut out and make for them. My friend George drew this. It's a neat looking knife. It's full of holes for nickel silver pins and a big 1/4" mosaic pin.

It's funny, but every time I make a knife, something goes horribly wrong. I put a wicked nick in the blade, burn off the point, bend the handle rivets or bung up the edges, sand too much wood off one side... Don't even get me started about the sheaths and trying to get my stitches to come out straight on the other side. I'm eventually going to get better and make a quicker job of turning out a knife. Then I'm going to see what the rules for selling stuff are. I'm never going to make anything fancy or anything in quantity, but I'd like to have this hobby pay for itself.

Pay for itself---Ha! Seems like there is always more things to acquire than there is revenue.

Now you got me wondering.
Of those who have "made it" so to speak as a knife maker --- How many years/knives until the TOTAL revenue has exceeded the TOTAL cost. I'm guessing the average is in the 10 to 20 year and one hundred knife range.

Anyhow, it looks like you are coming along fine. IMHO

I have had some problems with the stitching lining up on the back side also. Seems some leather is spongy and that will give you a problem for sure. I have been using better leather and making sure things are flat/square when drill and the stitching is not much of an issue any longer.

Before you drill the holes, glue the front and back of the sheath togather, then shape and trim off the excess to make the edges smooth. Using dividers or some other method, make a mark about 1/4 inch from the edge all the way around the sheath. That way, when you drill from one side, the drill comes out lined up on the oppisite side.

I glue up my sheaths, and use a tool to scribe a groove on both sides. I try to hold the sheath edge flat on the drilling board but I can never get the stitches to come out in the groove on the other side.

There is a simple solution to that.

Just grove one side. I groove the top. Drill the holes, then cut the groove through the holes. I can't drill straight through, either.

I would like to have a sewing machine, but they are expensive.

What's the overall length? It defines multi purpose IMO. I'd take it if around 6-7".
