It's been a zillion years since I've loaded for one and I got one coming. What powder do you boys like? I'll be mostly running 85gr TSX's and 87gr V-max.

Thanks

Im a bit like you steelhead. I just got a 243 after years of not owning one.Like you Ive opted for barnes 85tsx and are using IMR 4831. Have worked up to max load of 47grs which gave my best accuracy at 1" for 3 shots at 100yards off a benchrest.Havent played around with seating depths at all yet, as I need it urgently for an up coming hunt..

Im using lapua brass and federal gold primers. Will chrongraph it within next month or so.....

Would also like to try 87gr vmax.....

I haven't done much 243 work, but it was super easy to get killer results with H4350 and 95 grain bullets.

I've been using Varget with fairly good results. I had eight pounds for my 7mm08, so that is what I used. miles
edit: I mostly load 100 grain bulk bullets.

Just ran this load this morning and looks promising. Speer 90g HC, Winchester brass, Rem 9 1/2, RE19 2 grains under max in the Speer book. Getting book velocity after accounting for 2 inches less barrel out of a Savage 99F. 3/4 inch groups at 50. Need to verify groups at 100 though and then go from there. COL is 2.685.
Old 2X7 Redfield set at 7X.

Has the Magpro been consistent? That is the only knock I have heard on it but have not had a chance to play with it myself.

85gr TSX will go length-wise on most anything that walks.

85gr TSX, 44gr IMR 4831, CCI200, RP brass...It's kind of hard to see because of the covered up bullet holes, but you can see the groups fired using the X bullet (and IMR4320) and the TSX. The sierra 85gr BTHP hits the same POI as the TSX as you can see...

IMR 4831 & 4350 with 100grn Partitions. I'm taking a M7 action down to Mickey in the next few weeks to do a 243AI with a 9 twist barrel. May try some Magpro or Varget for workups...

I've gotten religion about checking neck thickness variation on every piece of brass I intend to use for any serious shooting. I've found it much easier to load straight ammo with brass having no more than .001" (or maybe an indicator needle width more) variation. No matter what load development system you use straight ammo will work better. Mystery flyers from otherwise reliable loads and rifles are greatly reduced.

I've checked WW, RP, FC and Lapua and the only brand I've found to be consistently good is Lapua. The others run hot and cold.

I just checked out a box of RP 243 cases and they were superb, as good as Lapua. In contrast I checked forty pieces of RP 223s from once fired factory ammo and only five had .001" or less variation. Most had .002" or more, pure junk.

I've checked WW 223s and in one bag the reject rate was high enough to make the keepers as expensive as Lapua. Before you think I'm a Lapua worshipper let me say I've found a dud or two from them, but they're few and far between.

I really like RL19 in the 6mm Rem with both those bullets. I know it's not a .243 but man that's close.
