Fast + Heavy
Slow + lite

A 1-9 is about average right? Or do I have it all wrong?

the longer the bullet, the faster a twist you'll need ...

traditional twist for a .223rem is 1:12" ... made for bullets up to about 50-55g ...

1:9" and the 69g SMK were made for each other ... but that same 1:9" twist is on the ragged edge for the 75g Amax at SAAMI .223rem speeds ... and the 75g Amax is the bullet you'll want to shoot, if going above 50g ...

So if you're building from scratch, go with a 1:8" twist and you can shoot anything from 40's to the 75g Amax ...

I agree with WGM that the 69 SMK and 1:9 is a great match, but disagree partly with the 1:8 for shooting anything. With my 1:9, I've found that I don't get great accuracy shooting lighter bullets. I personally believe the bullet is over-stabilized, although some will argue that you can't over stabilize. I'm in the crowd that advocates choosing your twist rate to match the bullet you are most likely to shoot.

I bought some bullets off a guy the other day who couldn't get stabilization from his 1-9" factory Remington 700. Those bullets were the 75gr A-Max, 75gr Berger VLD, and the 80gr Sierra Matchking. My barrel is a 1-8", so I should be good. Finally got an action for my rig, now just to get it all assembled!

My Bushmaster AR-15 with 1:9 shoots everything from 50 to 69 grains very well.

I have a Colt AR with a 24" 1:9 twist that will shoot 35 to 69 grain bullets good. I've tried 70 grain TSX's in it with just OK (1.5") results.

my .223 is a 1:9" twist, 24.5" long, PacNor 3 groove SS PSS/Varmint contour ... it's a VERY fast barrel. That said, I can shoot the 75g Amax with no problems ... in fact, the rifle shoots them very well. It also shoots 40's very well ... and 50's ... and the 69SMK's ...

a slower twist if you only plan on shooting 40's and 50's might be better, or not. All I know is this is what a 315 yard, 15 shot group of 40g NBT's looks like from my 1:9" twisted .223 ... and these were some of my first handloads ever ... and my first time shooting at targets further away than 100 yards ... wind was also blowing between 3-5mph ...

I'll continue to go with faster twists, as I haven't seen it cause any issues at all ...

My Stevens 200 with a 1/9 will not run a 75 AMAX with any accuracy...Shotguns patterns. AMAXes tried with Varget and Benchmark. Neither worked well.

A 1-9 is on the edge for the 75's from anybody. A 20" AR barrel may not stabilize them, while a 24" bolt barrel might, just because of the difference in velocity the extra 4" gives you. A higher velocity with the same barrel twist rate will result in a faster rotation, giving better stabilization to longer bullets. That's why WGM's "fast" barrel may stabilize a 75, but Joe Blow's "slow" barrel might not. A 1-9 is on the ragged edge and only specific testing on that barrel will tell if it will stabillize a 75. I have 5 AR's with twist rates from 1-7.75 to 1-12 depending on what I will shoot out of them. If you can, get another upper with a different twist when the target changes requiring a different bullet. That's one of the beauties of the AR platform.

Well with a factory Savage 12 BVSS with a one in 9, that rifle will shoot any 80 grain bullet or 75 grain just as accurate as one could desire..

I run my loads in the 2700 to 2900 fps range depending on powder and charge...but I've had NO Stability problems EVER! granted it only has about 2000 rounds down the barrel...

a one in 8 twist barrel or a one in 7 twist barrel will shoot all of those weights...even in 223...

If your bolt action rifles are shooting them accurately, I'd look at your loads, before I'd blame the barrel twist...

my Savage will shoot an 80 grain A max just as accurately as it will a 55 grain V Max...except when the distance is greater, then the 80 grainers leave the 55 grainers in the dust...

BigDaddyK,

I used to shoot the 80 Sierras from my 9 twist Savage .223 out to 700 yards. Then I discovered the rifle prefered the 75 A-Maxes. In fact my longest 'chuck was with the A-Max: 527 yards. Entered the rump and exited the chest as it was grazing away. I shot only one group with the A-Maxes at 724 yards. It was six shot in a five inch group.

I agree with Fast_Ed's post on velocity. Another test is air temps. Colder = thicker air which will slow a bullet down. My acid test a few years aback was shooting Hornady 75 BTHP Match in my 16" RRA, 1:9 barrel @ NATO spec velocities of 2750 fps in 15 degree temps. With my 2x ACOG I was getting 10" 10-shot groups @ 600 yds. Not going to win me a medal but will keep the Zombie's ducking.
