any thoughts as to how much velocity you lose when you go to the 14.5 inch? My new upper is still under construction (checked today) and I have the option of going to a 14.5 inch barrel with a pinned flash hider. just curious what the gang here thinks, I plan to mount a mid range scope on the gun and shoot 77 grain bullets for the most part!

I chronographed 2 14.5" Colt barrels against 4 16" Colt barrels and 2 20" Colts. The velocity was appr. 100fps slower from 20-16 and appr. 100fps slower from 16-14.5, given it's pain to remove a properly pinned flash hider to change anything out like rails I will pass and wound up selling my 14.5".
I need to add this was with 55 grain ammo, XM193 to be exact. Other bullet weights and powders might see a difference.

after thinking about it, the 16 inch is probably the way I am going to stay, I did change the flash hider to a AAC blackout, the one I shot yesterday seemed to direct more noise away from me than the A2 birdcage. I was no terribly impressed with the TA31DOC. The stadia lines between 100 and 200 are so close it is difficult to aim with just one of them. The DOC option worked fine, I like the no battery required, but the reticle lends itself to inadvertantly using both 100 and 200 yard stadia as a group for the shot, this is more pronounced the brighter they glow. I don't like the triangles and donuts in the TA11 models so I am still debating which way to go there.

I've probably stated this before in so many words but trying to find a "do it all, be all" anything always leaves you with a compromise. One thing to think about is a higher powered scope for mid to long range in a LaRue QD mount and a red dot for close up to mid range.
But the closest thing to perfection on what you're looking for is a Schmidt & Bender short dot. At least they get the best reviews, they're way out of my price range and going higher so I'll probably never know.
