I have been tempted to get a Socom 1. If you have owned one or still do, how well do you like it? Any problems? Was it too Loud vs the Flashhider on the standard M1A?
I have handled several lately, and I like the sights, and the quick handling feeling it has. I kinda like the idea of a short, fast handling, heavy hitter with 10 to 20 rounds in reserve, but I don't know anyone who has one I can try before buying. Just looking for feedback.

Haven't shot one, handled a couple friends have, seems like an awful heavy rifle; I'm not one of these guys who weighs rifles, I don't even own a postal scale and I couldn't tell you what any of my rifles weigh.

So, if a guy wanted to get into the .308 game, Which way would you go?
M1A/M14
FAL (DSA)
AR10
I've been going back and forth between the M1A scout and a 16" DSA FAL. Now I'm wondering about an AR10. All I need is for the KelTech bullpup to finally come out and I'll be confused for sure.

Find an earlier Springfield with a chromelined barrel, or buy a DSA FAL. I had an FAL for a few years, very good gun, it was imported by SA and based on a receiver that was built in south america, good gun, accurate, reliable, but probably about 9 pound or so.

Just getting back here, I handled one of these sportical models, and you maybe right, this seems like a good choice.
However, I have read that the AR10 platforms in .308 are not that reliable, however DPMS uses their own magazines, so this may be a better setup. How reliable is your's?

I would not own a semiautomatic rifle that might be used under emergency conditions without a chrome lined bore and chamber. That is just me, I have seen at least 4 remington autos put out of commision by rust in the chamber, your mileage may vary of coarse and it is your money.
I was wondering about the chrome lined chambers, and was told that the Springfields had chrome lined chambers, but I am not so sure that is correct. Like you I am a fan of the chrome lined chamber.

Mine is very reliable. I use DPMS Mags (I have 10). They are great!
The issue with the DPMS is the very tight chamber. THis means that the shoot very acuraately, but oversize ammo will jam.
DPMS lists specific types of milsurp that you should not use.
I shoot Black hills match ammo and then reload it. Works fine.

Service grade Springfields have a chrome lined chamber&bore. I have a service grade M1A and I like it a lot better than my FAL/Imbel done into STG config. The trouble with the tight chambered rifles with a do not use list is it may happen that you only have access to a type that is on the list. S.O.L.

I cannot disagree. I can, however, follow up with the fact this I know what it eats well and can adjust.
In a End-Of-The-World-As-We-Know-It scenario, the tight tight chamber is a bad thing.
In a home defense scenario being limited to 10 Nineteen round magazines of Hornady TAP-PFD 150 Grain Ammo is not so bad.

Well, I can see there are plenty of pitfalls to advoid, regarding choosing a good semi-auto .308. I was just about to purchase one of the DPMS's, but I don't want a gun that is picky on ammo, I want to be able to shoot the cheap stuff, I can't afford much of the premium stuff.

Call DPMS and ask about the sportical. It does not have al of the "match"tuff and might have a looser cahmber.
