I'm thinking this is not to an exotic question and answer to far away? I planning on flying into Deerlake, New Foundland to try for a moose later this year and am wondering how difficult it will be to get the meat and head home. While brining home the best cuts will reduce the poundage some, I'm guessing there will still be a fair bit of meat left to deal with. Can anyone give me some tips as to how to handle the task? Any special requests I need to make of the airlines, things to watch or do that may reduce the stress and cost involved ...

Cut and wrap the meat , freeze solid in a leak proof cooler , take as luggage and ship your hunting gear by Canada Post , much easier getting through customs that way.Not sure who your flying with but check with the airlines for maximum weight per piece , usually its around 50 lbs or so.

One more thing if u plan on shipping your meat as cargo it use to be and still might be that u need prior approval by your homeland security dpt, they will give u a import number upon request which the airlines might want to see.Not all US stations with Customs will allow import of wild game as airfreight, there are usually designated ports for entry as well.

I had no problems crossing the Border. You MUST sign the CGL in the presence of the Officer and the rifle(s) will be checked to verify the Serial number(s).

We have had many hunters come up from L.A. for many years. As was mentioned get the meat cut and wrapped, 400 lbs of dry ice/blankets and they would drive back to L.A. from northern Alberta. Meat never thawed. Elk and moose travel well this way. Now these same fellas still coming up every year but they now use these Weekend Warrior type trailers where the back wall drops down and they drive out their quads. They also have a deep freezer in the unit. Now that´s the way to go. Get a kick out of the weekend warriors- fitting name.

Shipping rules have changed in the last couple of weeks, so you need to check with your carrier. Each airline has slightly different rules & charges. It's not getting any easier, prettier or cheaper!

Not to be smart but Newfoundland is one word, not two.
I've been there a couple times. You'll love it. Great moose hunting and the nicest folk you'll meet in NA.

Last year, my Newfoundland outfitter told me to drive to Newfoundland if at all possible. It's a killer drive, but I got everything home in good shape.

I drove and my moosie was boned, cut and vacuum sealed. Put it in a large sized cooler with a lot of just plain old ice and drove 1500 miles home. Not one single problem much easier to keep it cold than to keep it frozen. Once home...freezer time.

Yup. And from my point of view, there are much worse ways to travel than driving through New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and after the ferry ride...Newfoundland.

put diapers in the bottom of the boxes...they will soak up 5 times what anything else will, should it thaw and leak..

I was told that dry ice isn't available in Newfoundland anyway. I couldn't even find any in Maine on the way home. I just used regular ice.
I don't know what you'd do if you were flying.

I bring meat back from AK. Take 2 coolers, and ship the gear back USPS. Coolers are loaded with frozen meat. And its generally a LONG day of travel to get from my hunt to home.... No issues. Last time one cooler even missed a flight and we had to wait longer before leaving for home for it to arrive.
No dry ice, no ice, etc..

I have a trip planned with Roberts Outfitting out of Deer Lake NL this fall as well. My plan, pending success, is to have it locally butchered and then shipped via truck back to the states. Central NL Shipping ships meat, hide and horns. They are at 709-424-4862. Last year they shipped to Ft. Worth (and I am in Dallas). I do not know how far west they go.
