Ok, here is what a cast bullet base is suppose to look like.

I show several different calibers here.

If you are getting the sprue 'ripped' out you are not letting the lead cool sufficiently to allow the sprue plate to cut it.

Here are some suggestions.

Cast slower.
Pour the mould full, and then let it cool by itself maybe 30-45 seconds if needed.

If you are impatient try this.

Get a wet towel, really wet with water, set it to the side, folded over several times but flat.
After you pour, let the sprue harden so it won't run when you turn over the mould. then HOLD the sprue plate against the towel. count to 5. Lots of steam and hissing should occur. Hold the sprue plate level onto the wet towel so the whole sprue is cooled.

Then wack with you're wooden mallet to open sprue. Sprue should be 'cut' not ripped.

This way you keep the mould hot, to keep pouring, but cool the sprue to get a good cut.

You can also try reducing the temperature of your lead once the sprue starts ripping. This will allow the alloy to cool faster but watch out to make sure you're still getting good fill out.

You will also want to make sure you're sprue holes are sharp and no lead has build up on them. clean them good. apply some mould release to the sprue plate holes if needed, or smoke them.

I wear heavy leather gloves while casting, and cut the sprue by hand. It's not at all difficult to do, and I feel in makes the moulds last longer, since I'm not hitting them with a stick. This could be especially helpful with cheap aluminum moulds such as LEE.
