I'm more advanced in years than most and it's getting tougher and tougher to close the deal lately (getting the deer to the truck). The area that I hunt is relatively flat, but has lots of downed timber, washes, sloughs, and finally a sand levy to climb before I reach the truck. Wheeled carts are more trouble than good, motorized vehicles are prohibited. My shortest retrieve was about 250 yds, but most are around one mile. I use a drag harness and tie off the deer so the head just clears the ground when I'm standing upright. Last season I harvested a nice 10pt and fat doe (Ilinois allows two deer for gun season). Both drags started within forty yds of each other and were a full mile to the truck. If I didn't love this so much, I might consider another activity come late November. I'm open to suggestions on how to "ease my pain" ... and no, I can't hunt from the truck. \:\/

I try to part mine out only to edible stuff and leave the rest for the coyotes. If you dont want to do that go with one of the plastic deer sleds, they are lightweight and roll up into a tube. They are super slick and slide right over rocks and debris, my partner swears by his.

Being a cheapskate, I made a skid out of a discarded computer chair mat. You know the kind, clear plastic, your computer chair rolls on it?
I put a 1 X 2 brace across the small end, and hooked that to two small clevis pins. A length of rope, and I have a great little deer skid for almost nothing.

I am up there in age as well nor am I as strong as I used to be. I can understand what its like there as some of Maine is like what you describe.

I would look for another place to hunt thats closer to the road.

When hunting in Vermont most of the drags are downhill and not anywhere near a mile. These days I would not hunt in that far without help. In Connecticut I can get the farmer to use his front loader. Thats hard to beat. Otherwise my son has dragged them out.

This one was about 200 dressed. The farmer and I could not even pick it up to lift it into the bucket. He had to lower the blade more so that we could drag it into the bucket. Look for a place like this.

Over the years, I've killed more and more bucks further and further away from my 4WD.
I started out just gutting them and dragging them. Too hard on me and the deer. Gets them dirty too.
Then I started breaking them up into chunks and leap frogging them out. I progressed into skinning them on the ground as well.
I've concluded that's just too much work. So now I'm going to debone them where they fall and pack out what meat I can as well as the head, or just the antlers, with the first trip. The meat I leave behind will be up in a tree, off the ground on the north side of the tree, etc. I'll get it a distance from the rest of the carcass as well.
I've resisted this method for a long time. Makes for lots of effort at the kill site, when you really don't feel like doing much. But, in the long run, it saves time and effort. The meat stays clean and it gets to cool out more quickly, etc.
If you choose to use this method, you'll need a pack that can carry 40-70 lbs., and a set of trekking poles for balance. The necessary knives, a small saw, and some meat sacks, etc. E

looks like an arrow sticking up inside the first pic??

Any distance to a haul, I part mine out and carry it, but even if not carrying, IE dragging with a sled, I'd still lighten it up as much as I could.

This is what I use:

But that is on private land \:\)

I would use a deer dolly. I can't imagine it being too tough for a dolly, we have some nasty stuff in our woods here and a dolly beats the hell out of dragging them. even if you have to go through water, over logs, trough brush, etc, the big wheeled dollies are the way to go IMO.

Good luck

We drag them out by tying the front legs to the antlers and grabbing the antlers. It works best with two people.

Other times I'll cut a slit in the hide even with the third rib on both sides. Then I wrestle it up over the saddle, slip the horn up through the slits and tie the center of a rope around the horn with a hitch. I use each end to tie the legs down and a chunk of twine to tie the antlers back to the rear of the saddle so it doesn't catch on brush. Then the horse does the rest.

Thats just a tuft of hair.

The buck was feeding in that cut cornfield with does. I was 193 yds away with my 270 WSM shooting 140 BTs. The first shot hit the buck just behind the shoulder when he was facing a little away. He hunched up, relaxed and resumed feeding!!! The second shot hit him in about the same place and he just stood there. The does ran off.

Then I put the third shot into the base of his neck where it joins the shoulder and it was lights out.

I changed to Accubonds when I saw the results and that none of the 140 BT's made an exit.

Where we hunt there is about a one walk in. I came up with this deer catf that doubles as a short treestand!!!

Blowdowns-
I cut them up as small as necessary and pack them to where I can get something easier to it. Pillowcases are your friend for covering the meat.

Dragging-
I cut them in half right at the diaphram if they are to big to drag whole. I skid them on a couple of sticks also.

I do tend to drag them with the head higher than you describe.

Mountain Bike-

Makes a dandy game cart for narrow trails and it has brakes.

Bike Cart /game cart. I go to the cart as soon as I can get the animal to it.

Ussually I drag them. Have made a backpack outta one, and while it wasnt an enjoyable experience, it was alot easier than dragging the deer, considering the terrain an distance.

This year if I get one, Im Butchering it on the spot. After last years buck I'm not goona drag a deer very far again.

Never understood states the MAKE have to bring the critter out whole, can't think of anything more stupid.

If I can't get it there within a 100 yard drag it goes back in quarters. Nasty stuff gets completely boned out.

Or you could do like a Grandpa of mine. He likes to find some ungodly hell-hole of a jungle an kill a deer in the bottom of it.

Then he'll amble on down an gut it out an then get back to the truck an call one of his kids. Then they come up an take care of the rest.

It might be best to break it down and haul it out. What your facing we are all going to be facing some day. I am hoping to have the junior helper that may not always be possible the only thing I can think of is to break it down either by quarters or bone it. This is how we handle elk and it is not really hard to do and it makes a couple of trips but in the long run it is the easiest to do.

Carry some of the cheap painters tarps in your pack to put the meat on it keep it clean on the last trip roll up the tarp into a ball put into the pack and go home.
