BigDaddyK: I have my Ruger 77/17 V/T sighted in just a tad high at 100 yards. Out just past 100 yards is where I prefer to start "using" my 17 HMR Rifle.
I quit shooting at the smallest Varmints (Ground Squirrels, Weasels and the like) out nearer to 200 yards and the larger Varmints (Crows and such) I have been known to bonk clear on out to 240 yards or so on occassion.

Got mine sighted in at 30 yards. It's almost 1" high at 100 yards. I have bird feeders at 30 yards, and have to keep them "squirrel free" (grin!)

With 17 grainers, mine is dead on at both 50 and 100 yds. Height of rings can change things. Mine is 1.5 " above the center bore.

Thats about where mine is hitting now with CCI hp 17s.

I think just about any bullet will be accurate enough to hunt with in my 17 but I use CCI because Wal mart carries them and they are easy to get.

I was about 6 inches low at 200 yesterday shooting off the hood of my truck. Might have been tighter groups had I used a bench and sand bags. I shot 10 rounds in about a 5" group.

I have mine zeroed at 100 yards. If you're interested, http://www.rimfirecentral.com has a nice 17HMR/17HM2/22LR trajectory chart at the top of the 17HMR forum.
