I have a 10-22 Magnum on the way and plan on doing some of the "usual" 10-22 modifications to it. I would like to pick somebody's brain about the 10-22M and what is different about customizing it as opposed to a regular 10-22lr.

If you have any suggestions, just post them here or PM me.

Thanks!

I had one a cupple years back. I put a Green Mtn. fluted bull barrel on it, with a Hogue stock. PowerCuston hammer. Only ammo that I found that would function relilably was PMC. Finally got bored and traded it off.

You might want to reconsider any permanent modifications, since they're now a discontinued model, and sure to increase in value to a Ruger collector - IF in issue condition.

If it is in really nice shape and you have the original box, papers, etc., I'd suggest keeping the original stock and barrel, so that you could put it back into its original configuration when you're done with it.

I bought several of them back in 2003 and converted some of them to 17 HMR. The 10/22 Magnum was popular with some Conservation Departments for culling deer at night, as you could spotlight the deer and shoot 5 or 6 before the noise spooked them.

Green Mountain has been closing out a number of barrel configurations, so you might find a 17 HMR barrel for 1/2 price, if you were interested in going down that path.

Mine is far from collector quality. In fact, I bought it so I could tinker on it. I was hoping to compare notes with somebody who'd already modified one.

There's a multitude of folks, over at http://www.rimfirecentral.com , including product sponsors, who're into modifying 10/22 standard & magnums.

Waders,

five or so years ago I got one and went from stem to stearn on it.

A couple of tips

1) Call Green Mountain barrel and tell'em your looking for a clearance 10/22 magnum barrel - you might be pleasantly surprised.

2) Get a power custom spring for the firing pin

After that the rest is "I'd like it" class, maybe get yourself a nice magazine release and a hogue stock.

BTW - Ruger sells Torx screws to replace those sucky slot screws in the rings.

Wade, it will all depend on how much you want to spend. On one of mine I had two barrels from Whistle Pig Ind. a 16" 17HMR and a 20" 22WMR. Awesome barrels that shot bug holes. It also had the Volquartsen trigger group and a scope rail so I could use the Arms 30 mm rings with the Mk 4 mil-dot Leupold. It also had a thumbhole stock that was the perfect combo for this gun. Wish I still had it but I updated to the Volquartsen with the carbon fiber barrel.

Here's one that was just to minty to break up as it appeared to be unfired, so it went to a new owner at a huge profit.
