What would be the ideal barrel lenght for the .220 Swift?

What are the con's of the Swift?

min 26" length....
cons...over bore cartridge...short barrel life...barrel get hot fast in p/dog fields...brass mfg ?...
The 223 AI pushing a 55 NBT @ 3500 fps is my idea of a great cartridge...good/plentyful brass everywhere...easy die sets..only 27 grs powder..or a 20 Practical (20-223) if you like 20s...

I have two, both are 26".
My opinion, that is the way to go.

4 me, I'd go either 23" or 25" and about .6-.65 at the mzl.

Cons-I've seen more than a few that flowed more brass than I wanted to deal with and I won't turn necks anymore.

I can do everything I can do with a Swifto with a 22/250 and trust me I really like the Swift. Just can't get myself to run one anymore, although the day aint over.

Have Swifts with barrels from 24" to 26" on up to 30".

For walking purposes 26" is OK.

If it will be shot from a bench like the 30" barrel.

Oh HECK, build TWO! LIFE IS SHORT!

26 seems to be the norm in factory. A good cross between velocity and being able to CARRY the sonovaGUN, lol

Good Luck, DONT FORGET TO POST PICTURES

I have a custom 220 swift built on a Pre-64 Win action and love it. Like P.O. Ackley said Speed kills. I have taken several Deer with mine with the 60 grain Nosler partitions and they dropped in thier tracks. All I can say is keep it clean and don't over heat it and you will get good barrel life.

I'm getting well over 3800fps with 55 grain NBT's out of a factory Remington barrel at 24". Powder is 4064 and no pressure signs. Your barrel length should match your intended purpose for that rifle.
Cons: They flow brass into the necks. This can raise your pressures and reduce accuracy. I run a Forster inside neck reamer into each case before I size them. This will remove excess thickness near the case mouth.
Brass is more expensive for the Swift, but still not too hard to find.

Hopefully, I will always own at least one Swift! If you have a Swift, you won't need a .22-250!

Length depends on your use. I might go with a Rem factory magnum contour, fluted, at 24" on a walkin' coyote rifle. Otherwise I'd go with 26" and at least factory varmint contour, maybe a little heavier. I had a 700 VSSF that was amazing ... any doubt about me having the varmint bug got answered by that one: I'm hooked.

Cons. (1) The semi-rimmed case can bind up in the magazine if you overfill the mag. My gun worked great loading the magazine 1 shell shy of it's book capacity, but stuffed clear full, sometimes it wouldn't feed the first cartridge. I lost a coyote and a bobcat to the same jam one time. Argh! (2) I had to trim the brass every firing, however, that's been true of most things 'til I met X dies. (3) My gun didn't like new, unfired brass, it wouldn't shoot well 'til I'd fire formed each case to it's chamber. Went from a 2.5 to 3 MOA gun to a half MOA gun just that easy with the same loads. (4) If you're shooting high volume stuff, maybe like p-dogs, barrel heat can be a problem. (5) Muzzle blast and recoil can add up toward the end of a day, especially with a shorter barrel.

If you're building a gun, a bigger question for you might be twist rate. For rodents the standard 1-14" twist is pretty hard to beat. If you get up into coyotes, or even deer, a faster twist to handle the heavier bullets may be nice. However, my favorite swift loads pushed bullets beyond their design speed (like Hornady SXes at 3800 - 3900 fps) and they just will not hang together at that speed with the faster twists. So ... there are some tradeoffs. The plastic tipped bullets don't seem to have that problem, so if you don't mind shooting a more expensive light bullet like a ballistic tip instead of a cheaper SX or TNT, then you can mostly ignore that difference.

G' luck. The Swift is my favorite bigger .22 cartridge.

For me, the question boils down to brass. I've shot both, I probably have more experience with the '250, but DAMN that Swift can shine!! I've had more hassle with reloading in the Swift than the '250, and I attribute that to brass flow, piss-poor pockets, and lousy factory chambers. I have, at times, struggled to get the 22-250 into the stratosphere-like velocities that some have reported seeing, but hey ~ speed only impresses people on the internet and it is accuracy that kills, right? That said, I think accuracy of both is very, very good. Maybe with a custom-chamber and a quality barrel one can really wring them out, but so what? What will one prove? Who knows. And then there are the wildcats...that AI and Swift AI/Wilson-Arrow, etc. Solutions to existing problems? Maybe, maybe not.

MontanaCreekHunter: Out of the five 220 Swifts I am currently shooting, four have 26" barrels and the fifth has a 27 1/4" barrel.
The Swift is another Varminting cartridge that benefits from longer barrels.
Like others have mentioned brass life is comparatively short with the 220 Swift and one of my Swifts simply "eats brass"!
In Colony Varminting situations the barrel heating situation with the Swift is a true detriment.
Having said that I love to have a Swift along when I trek into the alpine regions of several mountain ranges I know of and Hunt Rock Chucks in.
I seldom fire more than 5 rounds from one setup site when after these high mountain Chucks.
Recoil even with my heaviest Swifts often impedes my ability to spot my own hits (misses!).
But for Coyote "control" I always have a 220 Swift along on calling type Hunts.
The flat trajectory, wind bucking ability and terminal results keeps the 220 Swift pretty high on my list of favorite Varminting cartridges.
If I were to build another custom Rifle in 220 Swift caliber it would have a 27" heavy stainless barrel.
Best of luck if you decide to go with the 220 Swift.
Hold into the wind

I won't be shooting chucks, ground squirels, or the likes. Coyotes and wolf. So not to worried about shooting tons of rounds. Barrel shouldn't get to hot so I think it will be ok for my application.
