Here's your platform to build off of:

Mossberg 500 pump, 3" magnum chamber.

What do you do?

Yes, and the current barrel is 28" (too long).

Hardwood stock, blued.

It's a 500AT, old style. WELL worn, but mechanically sound.

Here's my thoughts:

20-24"ish tube, super-full turkey choke, scope mount and a holo-sight (already have one, might as well use it).

Rattle-can camo the works.

Oh, and #4 buck is a given, as this one will almost certainly live behind the seat of the truck, and only come out when something needs a can of whoop azz opened PDQ.....

Sounds like a good plan.

I dont know anything about the holo-sight, but if it were mine I would be looking at a rugged set of sights for it instead of the scope.

Heres a question though. Given the range that a shotgun is used and the fact that your not exactly shooting it for groups. How much is the scope acctually going to help? As in, do you feel it's necessary?

I have a lil 870 3" 20ga that is slowly being built into a simmilar configuration, so I'm curious.

Holo-sight gives a "head's up display", is visible day or night given the adjustable rheostat, and I can't hit schit with a shotgun...... figure I ought to at least try it.

Ok I know what your talkin about know. Sounds like a good plan.

Gotta hunch mine will probly stay with the standard bead (or is it beads, i forget) on the barrel.

Mine started out at a wood stocked youth model. I'm here with it now. Gotta paint the fore end an probly add a lil white as well. When I get the gun back that is.

Reckon you knew whether your holo sight is rugged enough for rapid egress through the door frame. What kind is it?

I think the holosight is a good idea, as soon as I get a Smoothbore cantilever barrel with screw in chokes for my 11/87 supermag (supposedly Remington is offering them soon) I will get one.
It will be for turkey.

Hey killer,
I am liking the way you are thinking, but I have a couple of questions.

Are you just going to pick up a new barrel, or are you gonna cut the one you have and then thread it for a choke tube?

Do you care whether the holosight lives or dies?

My only concern is not for the integrity of the sight, but rather, that it will hang up on something when you try to jerk it out from behind the seat.

Don't care whether it lives or dies. If it goes TU, well, so be it, I'll run something else.

New (to me) barrel, as cutting and threading will run as much as a different tube, most likely.

Va...

I'm not a fan of sights on a shotgun unless I'm turkey hunting. A plain bead on the end of the barrel is plenty especially if it's going to be a dedicated predator shotgun. I'd "X" the scope but that is your call of course. Just MHO...

My pred shotgun is finished at 23" and is a pump. Love pumps rather than semis. Does not mean shots come out any slower, I promise.

#4 Buck, on average, does not like too tight a choke, relatively speajing. Maybe .660"-.690" is usually where most folks get their best patterns. My gun is the exception. I'm running a .640" choke and it does this at 40 yards.

I can't overemphasize patterning your gun excessively at all ranges you'll be shooting. Some guns have a fantastic pattern at 30 yards and at 45 yards it is pathetic. Pattern, pattern, pattern...

Let us know how it goes...

I figure on patterning at 15, 30, and 45 yards. Any further than that, and I'll way-lay his azz with the Glock 20 or a rifle.

Hmmmmmm...... I may but the holosight on the Glock, just 'cause.....

VA:

I know you have a plan, but later on, if you get the urge to tinker further, consider putting a Polychoke on the barrel. I think they're still available.

Some hate them, and don't like the way they look. But if you're thinking in terms of using #4 buck for one application and No. 6 shot for another - and the time involved in shucking one type of ammo out and shoving another type in has to be factored in your calculations - it could be handy.

I've got on on my truck gun. It's on my truck gun because it is a truck gun.

If I was thinking along the lines of a Poly Choke, rather than have one installed on my barrel, I would buy the adjustable choke tube and just screw it in. It adjust the constriction the same as the fixed on the barrel Poly Choke does. Then if you want/need to change that out, it is a simple swap just by changing choke tubes. BTW, I responded to this post over at PM.

You mean there are two of us (grin).

For my area i don't see the conection between turkey hunting and turkey guns and predator hunting and predator guns that some do. In my brushy areas where I use a shotgun. Its more like shooting at a big rabbit on the move than aiming at a called in slow moving Turkey.

Truth is the gun he has now including the 28" barrel (best all purpose barrel length ever made!) would likely be fine.........after patterning.

The rest is just fun and games........

When your patterning, try a box of Dead Coyote. I know the stuff is expensive, but I would be supprised if you didn't get a better pattern, better penitration and longer range with it. At least out of my gun, I was shocked at how well it out performed #4 buck.

I started a thread to this effect right after I came to the campfire. I got a lot of good information from MOGC. Also I read his thread on the subject on the PM forum. I managed to get my shotgun together enough to use it twice on spring 'yotes. I ended up using a Primos choke tube (turkey choke, .650 constriction) and Federal Premium 3" #4 buckshot. It's spooky out too 60 yards. I also tried the Dead Coyote T shot and the Remmy wingmaster HD BB loads. They sucked compared to the Federal Premium stuff. Apparently the Federal Premium stuff is the only commercial load that uses shot cups, and it patterns WAY tighter than all the other #4 buck out there. I didn't think it would pattern worth a crap with that tight a constriction, I was wrong. This is in an 870 cheapy (used to wear a 20" barrel ala house gun) It now also has a 28" vent rib with one of those magnetic stick on fiber optic sights and a little white mid-rib. A shorter pipe would be nicer, but I'd hate to give up a coyote killin' pattern at 60 yards...

I always take the 870 on stands, and an AR15 carbine in 223 loaded with 60 grain v-maxes. I try like hell to hold out for the "shotgun" dogs, its so much more fun to ass over teakettle a yote with a shotgun \:D
