Here's your platform to build off of:
Mossberg 500 pump, 3" magnum chamber.
What do you do?
Yes, and the current barrel is 28" (too long).
Hardwood stock, blued.
It's a 500AT, old style. WELL worn, but mechanically sound.
Here's my thoughts:
20-24"ish tube, super-full turkey choke, scope mount and a holo-sight (already have one, might as well use it).
Rattle-can camo the works.
Oh, and #4 buck is a given, as this one will almost certainly live behind the seat of the truck, and only come out when something needs a can of whoop azz opened PDQ.....

Sounds like a good plan.
I dont know anything about the holo-sight, but if it were mine I would be looking at a rugged set of sights for it instead of the scope.
Heres a question though. Given the range that a shotgun is used and the fact that your not exactly shooting it for groups. How much is the scope acctually going to help? As in, do you feel it's necessary?
I have a lil 870 3" 20ga that is slowly being built into a simmilar configuration, so I'm curious.

Reckon you knew whether your holo sight is rugged enough for rapid egress through the door frame. What kind is it?

I think the holosight is a good idea, as soon as I get a Smoothbore cantilever barrel with screw in chokes for my 11/87 supermag (supposedly Remington is offering them soon) I will get one. It will be for turkey.

Hey killer, I am liking the way you are thinking, but I have a couple of questions.
Are you just going to pick up a new barrel, or are you gonna cut the one you have and then thread it for a choke tube?
Do you care whether the holosight lives or dies?
My only concern is not for the integrity of the sight, but rather, that it will hang up on something when you try to jerk it out from behind the seat.

I know you have a plan, but later on, if you get the urge to tinker further, consider putting a Polychoke on the barrel. I think they're still available.
Some hate them, and don't like the way they look. But if you're thinking in terms of using #4 buck for one application and No. 6 shot for another - and the time involved in shucking one type of ammo out and shoving another type in has to be factored in your calculations - it could be handy.
I've got on on my truck gun. It's on my truck gun because it is a truck gun.

If I was thinking along the lines of a Poly Choke, rather than have one installed on my barrel, I would buy the adjustable choke tube and just screw it in. It adjust the constriction the same as the fixed on the barrel Poly Choke does. Then if you want/need to change that out, it is a simple swap just by changing choke tubes. BTW, I responded to this post over at PM.

Va...
I'm not a fan of sights on a shotgun unless I'm turkey hunting. A plain bead on the end of the barrel is plenty especially if it's going to be a dedicated predator shotgun.
You mean there are two of us (grin).
For my area i don't see the conection between turkey hunting and turkey guns and predator hunting and predator guns that some do. In my brushy areas where I use a shotgun. Its more like shooting at a big rabbit on the move than aiming at a called in slow moving Turkey.
Truth is the gun he has now including the 28" barrel (best all purpose barrel length ever made!) would likely be fine.........after patterning.
The rest is just fun and games........

When your patterning, try a box of Dead Coyote. I know the stuff is expensive, but I would be supprised if you didn't get a better pattern, better penitration and longer range with it. At least out of my gun, I was shocked at how well it out performed #4 buck.
