Is a 91 Mauser a small ring or a large ring action? And are any other Mauser barrels interchangeable? Thanks! Greg

Small ring. '93, '94, '95, '96, '38 Swede, and most Turk Mausers use small ring barrels. The threaded shank may be slightly longer or shorter. There are other small rings, such as the Mexican Mauser, so the above list isn't complete. Just what I remember just now.

I believe Brownells sells custom barrels for Mauser 91 in 250 Sav, 257 Rob, 300 Sav, and 35 Rem.

Thanks for the info, I wasn't sure what it was and curiosity was getting to me. Neighbor has three 91's and we weren't sure what fit what. Thanks again! Greg

Please be aware, that the M-91's ( including 93's, 94's, 95's & 96's), although they have a small front receiver ring - they are definitely NOT "Small Ring Mausers".
The terms "Small Ring" & "Large Ring" refer only to different (cock-on-opening) Mauser 98 actions - which are much stronger than the earlier, cock-on-closing Mausers.
The earlier actions have no third safety lug, don't have the large gas shield on the cocking piece, and are of generally not as strong steel as the later M-98 actions - although some M-98's are notoriously soft (like some Santa Barbara Spanish copies, etc).
That's why, as posted above, the barrels for them are for relatively mild chamberings.
The easiest way to differentiate between them, is to check if the bolt cocks on opening (M98) or closing (non-M98).

IIRC, all of the 1891 Argentine Mausers were chambered in 7.65x53. The magazine assembly is a mannlicher style single-stack arrangement that may, or may not, work well with other cartridges. Most, if not all, of the Argentine 1891 rifles that I have seen were made by Ludwig Lowe in Berlin and appear to be well-made with high quality pre-WW1 craftsmen. If the barrels are in good shape and your friend wants to shoot them, I believe that Hornady and Norma make 7.65x53 factory ammo that has about the same performance specs as the 308.

Don't forget to mention that they are tack drivers also. I have one that was sporterized with a cut barrel and it shoots open sights like no tomorrow.

I have to agree they are accurate if the barrel is good. We had to recrown one of the 91's that strung holes to the left. After that it shot much tighter groups, still to the left but closer to the 10 ring, and not stringing. His long gun is very accurate, more so than the two short rifles. Thanks to all who took the time to answer back much appreciated, and good shooting to all! Greg
